PREFACE

This book, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), is designed to develop the
English ability of the students of Sebelas Maret University or other users who need EAP
in attending lectures at university. The skills of English language developed in this
book include skimming for main ideas, scanning for specific details, identifying
implied meaning, paraphrasing, summarizing, defining, describing, explaining,
classifying, etc. The skills are given in four integrated language activities, namely:
listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
All of the skills are developed from various types of genre-based texts:
description, report, recount, procedure, explanation, exposition, and discussion. The
texts are of brochure, advertisement, letter to editor, diagram, essay, etc. By
recognizing the features of the texts with different structures, the learners are
expected to understand the meanings of the texts better. This book, therefore,
includes some exercises to help the learners understand the structures of texts such
as topic sentences, supporting sentences, restatement sentences, and cohesive
devices. In addition, in this book there are also exercises on sentence structure
recognition and vocabulary building, which are developed from related texts.
This book consists of seven units; each unit presents a different type of genre:
description, report, recount, procedure, explanation, exposition, and discussion.
Each unit consists of three or four parts. Each part consists of several activities aimed
at developing skills of English for Academic Purposes.

OPENING REMARK
In this globalization era, students are required to have adequate English ability
so as to support them in attending undergraduate, graduate and/or postgraduate
courses as well as in improving their competitiveness in the job market. During their
study, they should be supported by both ability to understand English-written
references and ability to effectively communicate it orally and in written form. Upon
completion of their study, they are also in need of English language fluency to
compete in the job market.
Considering the fact, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) is concerned about the
English language ability of its students. In 2001 - 2004, therefore, UNS put a mandatory
policy into effect that the students of UNS, particularly those in undergraduate (S-1)
regular program, attended TOEFL or TOEFL-Like test and possessed a score of > 450.
The students who did not pass the test were obliged to attend English language
training coordinated by Sebelas Maret University Language Center (UPT P2B). The
objective of this language training was to prepare the students to sit for the TOEFL or
TOEFL-Like test and to achieve the minimum obligatory score. The use of TOEFL or
TOEFL-Like score as a standard was due to the fact that the test was a recognized
test.
The English teachers and decision makers in UNS then shared the same
recognition that the aforementioned English language training merely prepared the
students to achieve the TOEFL score of at least 450. The training was neither to
support them in their study nor to improve their competitiveness in the job market.
This had to do with the materials of the training which only accommodated
receptive skills (listening and writing) and language elements (sentence structure
and vocabulary). As a result, the students with high TOEFL scores were not
convincingly able to effectively communicate their ideas in written and oral English.
Therefore, since 2005, UNS has implemented a new approach to English
language training for its students in undergraduate program. The objectives of the
training are not only to achieve the mandatory TOEFL score of at least 450, but also
to master English for Academic Purposes (EAP), which is necessary for the students to
support their current study or further study on the one hand and to improve their
competitiveness in the job market on the other hand. The EAP training develops
various academic skills, which are materialized in four integrated language skills
(listening, speaking, reading, and writing). It is expected that the EAP training leads
the students of UNS to advanced Academic English mastery.
