CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Makeup can make you feel more powerful and ready to face any situation

(Lisa Eldridge). Makeup is a way of applying a substance into the face such as

lipstick and powder which influences the overall appearance of someone as it is

also intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on to the human body

or any part to alter and beautify the appearance. Makeups creates a positive

change in appearance and thus enhance self-esteem it covers facial flaws and

enhance once confidence and interpersonal relation. It does not just serve as a

clothing for the face but makeup has become a medium that connects human

emotions.

Facial appearances and figures are credited as beauty in which someone invests

a lot on their outward appearances. Young girls tend to experience rapid physical

changes in between fifth and sixth year and this stage of growth is very important

for psychological development such as self-esteem and confidence. Their initial

experimentation with cosmetics is in early adolescence towards developing a

feminine identity and use it as a tool for social self-presentation and self-image

management. It serves as a sign of femininity in their symbolization of

stereotypical feminine values which are often seen as a way to enhance feminine

beauty ideals and serve to help women to conform to our society’s beauty

expectations (Scott, n.d.).


Makeup makes someone change his or her appearance temporarily. In todays

society, the influence of makeup has empowered a wide range of audiences it

became an art to self-express, where it became a relatable topic to everyone

between ages 13 to 15. Many women may wear makeup with the belief that it will

positively affect their level of physical attractiveness. It holds the possibility for a

woman to personally transform herself, resulting in an increase in self-

confidence. The effects of makeup to an individual varies in many perception,

such are it helps cover up imperfections, highlight certain points, make someone

look different as well as the effects of makeup on someone's self-esteem and the

need to feel attractive, and thus resulted to the frequency of makeup usage and

application thereupon, elevates an impact and affects an individuals’ outlook and

level of confidence.

Statement of the Problem

The goal of this study is to know the effects of makeup on a students level

of confidence. Makeup makes someone look beautiful and attractive, it enhances

their face and gives or emphasizes one’s features. However, Makeup impose its

own beauty standard and thus it tends to forget the essence of natural beauty.

Makeups alter one’s appearance to level up their confidence, because of the

norm that it imposes against beauty people rely on it to cover flaws and

imperfections. To address these, the researchers will conduct a research on the

effects of makeup in individuals and how it boosts the self-esteem and

confidence of the people who use these specific products. In conducting this

research, the researchers have the goal to lessen the stigma surrounding the use

of makeup. And how makeup is viewed by the general public. Lastly the

researcher would like to clarify on the misconceptions surrounding makeup and

the result of the research will be use as a recommendation and a basis for the

problem of the research.

Significance of the Study

For the society, this study will benefit the LGBT Community as well as

women. The researchers will attempt to shed light as were as to educate the

masses on their views involving makeup. And with this attempt, the researchers

also aim to elaborate on the psychological aspect of the effects of these

products. So as to fully make sure that the research is completely understand by

everyone.

For the institution, this study will help the school in implementing

programs that states the background, definition and possible effects of makeup

to an individual such as in self-confidence, self-esteem, and how make up can

how a person sees his or herself.

For the participants, they will learn and be aware about the possible

effects and benefits of makeups on one’s confidence level and the perceptions of

makeup application usage on an individual.

For the researchers, it will help them distinguish the outcome of the

effects of makeup on the confidence level and how the standard of beauty can

affect an individual and they will have information about their study.
