COMPUTERS
Computers have become a part of daily life. A lot of people have computers at home. They use
them for working, studying and playing games. However, in John Wilson’s house , the computer
is much more important.
John has programmed a lot of information about his life into the computer-his favourite TV
programmes, important birthdays and other facts. He has recorded a woman’s voice on to the
hard disk , and he has put speakers in every room. John’s computer talks to him, and tells him
what to do. For example, it says ‘ The TV news will start in two minutes. Turn the TV on.’ A
webcam watches the front door. The computer knows when somebody has come in and it says
‘hello’. The computer also knows John’s cat , Smoky. When the cat goes out, the computer says,
‘ Smoky has left the building.’
John is very proud of his computer system. The computer permanently records all the information
from each day. For example today Smoky has spent four hours outside. John hasn’t finished his
project yet. However, John’s wife is unhappy about the situation. She complains, ‘ The computer
controls his life-it has become an obsession.’ Last Christmas, John forgot to buy a present for his
wife-he was too busy with his computer. However, he won’t forget next year, because he has
programmed the computer to remind him.
