Topic: Passive Voice for Simple Tenses -Rules

There are two basic rules for converting sentences from


active voice into passive voice.
1. The places of subject and object will be
interchanged in the sentence.
2. Only 3rd form of the verb or Past Participle will be
used as a main verb in Passive Voice.

Why do we use Passive Voice?


1. When the agent is unknown, unimportant or
obvious from the context
2. To make more polite or formal statements
3. When the action is more important than the agent,
as in process, instructions, events,reports,
headlines, news items, and advertisements
4. To put emphasis on the agent

Active Voice and Passive Voice

Active Voice- the subject performs the action denoted

by the verb.

DOER+ACTIVE VERB +RECEIVER

Passive Voice- the subject is being “acted upon”

RECEIVER + PASSIVE VERB + DOER

Example:
Active Voice: Mrs. Chan washes the dishes.
Passive Voice: The dishes are washed by Mrs. Chan.

Active Voice: Our class won the first prize.


Passive Voice: The first prize was won by our class.

Active Voice and Passive Voice in the Simple Present


Tense
is/am/are +past participle

Active Voice: Someone locks the office every night.


Passive Voice: The office is locked every night.

Active Voice and Passive Voice in the Simple Past Tense


was/were +past participle

Active Voice: Someone locked the office last night.


Passive Voice: The office was locked last night.

Active Voice and Passive Voice in the Simple Future


Tense
will/shall + be+ past participle

Active Voice: I will finish the job tomorrow.


Passive Voice: The job will be finished tomorrow.

Present Progressive Tense expresses an activity that is in


progress.

Active Voice:

SUBJECT+ IS/ARE/AM +-ING FORM OF THE VERB +OBJECT

Passive Voice:

OBJECT + IS/ARE/AM + BEING + PAST PARTICIPLE +BY + SUBJECT

I am reading a story.
A story is being read by me.

The engine is driving the train.


The train is being driven by the engine.

Past Continuous Tense describes actions or events in a


time before now, which began from the past and was still
going on at the time of speaking.

Active Voice:
SUBJECT+ WAS/WERE +-ING FORM OF THE VERB +OBJECT

Passive Voice:

OBJECT+WAS/WERE+BEING+PAST PARTICIPLE+BY+SUBJECT

She was writing a novel.


A novel was being written by her.

They were saying their prayers.


Their prayers were being said by them.

Future Continuous Tense used to describe an event or


action that will occur over a period of time at a specific
point in the future.

Active Voice:
SUBJECT+BE+-ING FORM OF THE VERB+OBJECT

Passive Voice:
OBJECT+WILL/SHALL+BE+PAST PARTICIPLE+SUBJECT

I shall be riding my bike.


The bike shall be ridden by me.

They will be fixing the car.


The car will be fixed by them.

C. Post Activity

Rewrite the sentences in passive voice.


1. Sheila is drinking a cup of tea.

3. He was not feeding the dogs.
4. At 8pm tonight, John will be washing the dishes.
