INTRODUCTION

This project enables students to analyse arch truss structure which consist of two parabolic
chords with a span of 12m and have the following parameters; E=210GPa, Poison ratio=0.3,
and cross-sectional area=0.01𝑚2 using the Abaqus software, a well-known Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) package. Plus, it complements the ECS555 (Numerical Analysis and Finite
Element Methods) course. The project consists of three cases where students are required to
provide the details related to performing the following listed activities using the order
indicated.

For Case 2, students are required to perform a linear elastic static analysis by
considering the geometrical nonlinearities and nodal load of P=1000kN at the mid node at the
bottom of the chord. Therefore based on the condition that applied on this project there are
several objectives that can identified in this cases which are:

a) To learn about the ABAQUS on of the Engineering software to determine the FEA.

b) To generate the 2D meshing of the model and resulting the results in term of displacement
and forced applied.

c) To verify the reaction result by using Static Risk Method in order to find the load path of
the structure until failure.

Hence, the requirement of this case were further discussed in more detail in the remaining
sections of the case.

The following factor that may be possible constraints of this project which are the
type of support that used in those three cases which are pinned support. When the pinned
support was being used in a structure thus, it considered as completely restrained. When the
structure is in completely constrained thus the rigid body cannot possibly move under given
load or any other load condition. Therefore it gives the structure to be indeterminate where
infinitely many solution possible.

Lastly, the expected failures. Firstly, unbalanced nodal forced may introduce some
nonzero works under rigid body motion and may cause inaccuracies in the solution. Plus, the
stress and strain in a certain member may exceeds the limit value of the material.
