27 January 2013 Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is the international

day of remembrance for the victims and
the survivors of the Holocaust and other
genocides. Since 2001, 27 January has
marked Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.

This date was chosen because it was on this

day in 1945 that the largest Nazi death camp,
Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.

Each year a national theme is chosen to

provide a focus to the event. The theme for
2013 is “Communities Together, Build a
Bridge”. By taking inspiration from the past,
celebrating difference and
ensuring respect for all, we
can Build a Bridge in our
communities and help to
create a safer,
better future.

Hub Foyer – art installation

From mid January onwards
The Hub is proud to host a thought provoking and
powerful exhibition of Holocaust related works by
local artist Chava Rosenzweig. Featuring a number
of figurative images focusing on the fragility of life
and identity, as well as the power of symbols and
signs, the series is at once absorbing and reflective.

Chava has recently been commissioned by the

Imperial War Museum North to develop a major
public work interpreting the Holocaust which will be
on show from January 2013 throughout the year.

The display will run alongside an installation of

books kindly provided by the Library service and the
Association of Jewish Refugees, and is open to the
public.
