I. Introduction

One of the serviceability problems associated with high-rise building is the

shortening of vertical structural members caused by elastic deformation, such as
creep and drying shrinkage. In actuality, this type of shortening also occurs in
low-rise buildings, but stressed applied to the members in these types of buildings
are comparatively low and the amounts of accumulated deformation are negligible
due to the lower heights of the buildings. As a building becomes higher, the large
gravity load causes vertical members to shorten to a considerable extent, and the
effect of shortening on both structural members and nonstructural members can be
potent. Therefore, the shortening problem is mainly considered in high-rise
buildings, and both the total shortening and the differential shortening are
considered according to their fundamental caused, as show in Fig, 1. Total
shortening accumulates due to both the elastic and inelastic deformation of
vertical members on every floor.

In this paper, a new analysis method which more reasonably assesses the
deformation and load distribution of structural members in three dimensions is
developed.
