For Items 6-7

Teaching is something that takes place only when learning does. No matter what the teacher is doing in
his classes, if his students are not learning something significant, he is not teaching. When the student fails, the
teacher has failed more.

For Items 8-9

What sits on every dinner table in the United States? We use it every day on our food but rarely think
about it. Salt is an extremely important mineral that our bodies need, but too much salt is not good for us.
China and the United States produce the most salt in the world. Salt comes from dried seawater. Indians long
ago evaporated seawater and made salt to season their food. Salt is used in many ways. Glass and soap contain
salt. It is used to de-ice roads in winter. Also, it is used im medicine, oil refining, sewage treatment, cattle feed,
and even to soften hard water. As you can see, salt is a very important mineral.

For Items 1-5

Studies have consistently pointed to at least three major immediate factors that push children to stay or
live on the streets. These are: the poverty of the family, family relationship factors (physical or sexual abuse),
and peer influence. Poverty and peer influence when compounded with problems and stresses in the family
life such as family break-up, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence by step-parents, underemployed
parents, etc. altogether create undue pressure on the child to leave home and find a solace, protection, and
support from his peer on the street, eventually becoming susceptible to their influence and lifestyle.

In Metro Manila, population growth, urbanization and migration have increased through the years.
Children are often forced by circumstances to help their family eke out a living or fend for themselves on the
streets. Most of them are children of poor parents who migrated from rural areas in the hope of finding better
job opportunities in the city, but whose lack of education rendered them ill-equipped to struggle for survival in
the urban jungle and are thus confined to a life of abject poverty.

For the street children, life on the streets is a constant struggle to overcome the various negative
elements that threaten to overtake them and destroy their hope for survival. They work under the heat of the
sun or in the dark of the night from six to 16 hours, seven days a week, often in a combination of
“occupations” each considered a legitimate way to survive.

Solidarity is in fact the key to start this new way of life. One should never benefit from something new,
which will eventually have a problematic effect on future generation. A practical example is that of genetic
engineering. This technology opens up a new dimension for the world. It makes alteration of DNA possible.
The immediate effects are very positive as they, for example, a plant produces more seeds and furthermore no
pests will feed on them. Yet, the downside to all these will only be seen in the future. Once the structure of
DNA is altered, it would be impossible to change. Another negative impact is the fracture of the feeding cycle.
Therefore, it is essential for all to protect one another, as all generations are interrelated, which means that
whatever happens today speaks about the relationship of the present with past and future generations.
