REATED BARS (TMT-BARS)
1.0 * Introduction:
Thermo Mechanleally Treated (TMT) Bars 1s a recent technological advancement
for production of high strength detormed steel bars for concrete relnforcement, th cis,
Process higher strength Is obtained by thermo mechanteal treatment, wherein the steel
bars get intensive cooling Immediately after rolling, Sudden reduction In temperature
creates a hardened surface layer with the Internal core still belng hot, While further
cooling in atmosphere, tempering takes place by the heat from the core, This process Is
expected to Improve the properties of strength and ductility of the bars
2.0 Advantage
Generally, the higher strength In steel can be obtalned by Increasing Car
content, Mlero alloying, Thermo Mechanteal Treatment or Cold Twisting. So far Ia Indi,
cold twisting of bars was used extensively for production of high strength b:
bars can easily be Identified by the two main ribs being hellcal, where as in hot rolled
bars these ribs are straight, In the case of 1MT Hars the higher strenpth Is obta
thermo mechanical treatment and the Carbon content
leading to Improved Ductility,

3.0 Permission to use
However, It may be noted that deliberations are golng on at the Bureau of Indian
Standards (BIS), for making appropriate Provisions Is relevent HIS Codes and it is
expected that this will be done shortly. Meanwhile the properties of these bars have been
examined In this office and It has now been decided that these bars may be allowed to
be used In CPWD works.
4.0 Properties
This steel Is currently being produced In varlous grades by M/s Stee!
of India Ltd. (SAIL) and M/s Tata Stcel. The trade names for these hare are
TISCON-TMT respectively. The grades. chemleal prop
