EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE OF SINGLE

CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE WITH THERMAL BARRIER COATING

Abstract

Energy is very important for existence of life, welfare level and social development of
people as well as economic growth. Energy demand around the world is increasing rapidly as
a result of ongoing trends in modernization and industrialization. The rapid increase in fuel
expenses, the decreasing supply of high grade fuel on the market and environment
necessitates stimulated research on efficient engine with acceptable emission characteristics.

The state-of-art thermal barrier coating (TBC) provides the potential for higher
thermal efficiency of the engine, with improved combustion and reduced emission.

One advantage of TBC is that ceramic is better than the conventional materials.
MgZrO3, CaZrO3, mullite and AlO3 –ZrO2 are some of the ceramic materials used as TBC.

A four stroke single cylinder diesel engine is selected for carrying out the experiment.
It is planned to use the TBC on the piston head and study the analysis, performance and
emission and characteristics of the engine with and without TBC under various loading
condition.

As a part of it the emission test will be conducted and characteristics were studied
without TBC, in future the remaining test will be conducted and the emission and
performance characteristics also compared with and without TBC.
