Lesson Idea Name: Weather Data

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather events and infer weather patterns
using weather charts/maps and collected weather data.
a. Construct an explanation of how weather instruments (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer,
wind vane, and anemometer) are used in gathering weather data and making forecasts.
b. Interpret data from weather maps, including fronts (warm, cold, and stationary), temperature,
pressure, and precipitation to make an informed prediction about tomorrow’s weather.
c. Ask questions and use observations of cloud types (cirrus, stratus, and cumulus) and data of
weather conditions to predict weather events.
d. Construct an explanation based on research to communicate the difference between weather
and climate.
Technology Standard Addressed:
ISTE Standard 6: Technology operations and concepts
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
Understand and use technology systems

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot supports UDL in the following way:
• Activate or supply background knowledge of weather and weather tools. (Comprehension)
• Highlight critical features of weather and climate. (Comprehension)
• Use multiple media for communication of knowledge. (Action and Expression)
• Optimize access to tools and technology. (Action and Expression)

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the student response tool activity, the students will view a PowerPoint on weather tools, climate,
weather, and clouds. The student will engage in a classroom discussion about what they have learned as well

as passing around physical models of weather tools such as thermometers and rain gauges. The students will
fill out a worksheet using the information that they have learned during the lesson to keep in their notebooks
for future reference. The students will then put all of their notes away and pull out their technology for the
Kahoot activity.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will put away their notes and pull out their devices. The students can use tablets, phones, and
computers to play Kahoot. The teacher will pull up Kahoot on the Smart board and show the students the
classroom code. The students will go to Kahoot.com and type in the specific classroom code and then type in
their name. Once all of the students have joined the Kahoot the teacher will start the activity. The students
will silently answer the questions in the Kahoot. The teacher will pause after each question to explain what
the correct answer is and why. At the end of the Kahoot the teacher will turn off the Smart board and
download the student data to see how each student did.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☒ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will pre-select correct answers to the questions as well as displaying the correct response to the class after
the activity because I believe that it is important for the students to see what they got correct or what they
got wrong and what the correct answer is. If a student does not know what the correct answer to the
question, they will never learn the correct answer if the teacher does not explain.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the student response tool activity, the teacher will instruct the students to put away their devices and
clean off their desks. The teacher will then download the student data and examine which students missed
which questions and what topics need to be reviewed whole class or just small group.

How will the data be used?

The data that I collect from this Kahoot activity will be used as a formative assessment for comprehension of
Spring 2018_SJB
Student Response and Assessment Tools
content. The students will not receive a grade based on their score. I will use the data that I collect from this
Kahoot to find trends in missed questions or where students are excelling as a class. I will use this data to
form small group review groups for the students that all missed a certain question, as well as knowing what to
address with the whole group. In addition, the data from this Kahoot will tell me if my teaching method is
successful with the students or if I need to try to teach this information in a different way to meet the specific
needs of my students.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

The learning goal for this activity is for students to demonstrate understanding of weather tools and data with
seventy five percent accuracy on the Kahoot quiz.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel that the activity that I created could impact student learning by giving
me data to see if my teaching method is successful with the students or if I need to try to teach this
information in a different way to meet the specific needs of my students. In addition, I could extend this
activity by giving the students an online poll to see how they felt about the Kahoot and see if there is another
student response tool they want me to use in the classroom.
