1. From the movie “Why the ship needs local expert (the pilot) to park the ship, when the ship
captain already has hydrography data of the harbor?”
- Due to the enormous size of megaship, it needs a tugboat to spin the ship into precise
position to reach the port and the person who knows the best when to stop the ship’s
engines to spin the ship, the precise position and the exact time to stop the engines when
the ship already reach the port is the local expert.
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are an instruments to measure water velocities,
direction of flow, and depth. It has 300, 600, or 1200 kilohertz frequency. An ADCP is
mounted from a boat to measure water depth and velocity profile, the position tracked by
GPS. Water velocity measured by transmitting the sound into the water and measuring the
Doppler shift, or change in sound frequency, from signals reflected off particles in the water.
Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meters record water velocity, direction of flow, depth, and
temperature. Radar sensors compute surface velocity which related to the mean velocity in
the channel. Velocity and cross-sectional area are multiplied to compute discharge.
