Spring 14 - Week Seven Quiz solution – Modules 43-47

Problem 1) The uniform cylinder shown weighs 490.5 Newtons and starts from rest.
The friction force at the contact point is always sufficient enough to prevent slipping.
Use the acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.81 m/sec2. Find the velocity at t = 3 seconds.

C
. F  0.2t 2 Newtons

ANSWER:

a) v  0.024 iˆ m / sec
Problem 2) A wheel is rolling uphill at 3 rad/sec. The wheel weighs 48.3 lb and it has a
radius of gyration with respect to an axis through the mass center of 0.65 ft. The wheel
rolls without slipping. Use the acceleration due to gravity, g = 32.2 ft/sec2.
If the wheel is rolling with an initial velocity of 3 rad/sec uphill, how much time will it
roll up the incline until it reaches its highest point?

ANSWER:
c) 0.206 seconds
Problem 3)
The slender bar of length, l, and mass, M, starts from rest in the horizontal position. It
impacts the little mass, m, when it is in the vertical position. The little mass can be
treated as a point mass. Immediately after the collision, the point mass has exactly the
same velocity as that of the bar’s tip. How far will the point mass slide before it comes to
a stop?
