GENERAL RULES

(SPELLING BEE)
1. All participants must be bonified student of MMG
College of General Santos City Inc.
2. Each department must have three (3) participants in
Spelling Bee.
3. In EASY ROUND you are only given 10 seconds to
answer every word given. And each correct spilled
word will have a corresponding of 3 points.
4. In AVERAGE ROUND you are only given 15
seconds to answer every word given. And each
correct spilled word will have a corresponding of 5
points.
5. In DIFFICULT ROUND you are only given 20
seconds to answer word given. And each correct
spilled word will have a corresponding of 10 points.
SPELLING BEE
EASY ROUND
PLAGIARISM – (noun) the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and
passing them off one’s own.
TREASON – (noun) the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting
to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government.
ONEROUS –(adj.) (of a task, duty, or responsibility) involving an amount of effort
and difficulty that is oppressively burdensome.
PSEUDO – (noun) not genuine; a pretentious or insincere person.
DICHOTOMY – (noun) a division or contrast between two things that are or are
represented as being opposed or entirely different.
GRUELING – (adj.) extremely tiring and demanding.
ETIQUETTE – (noun) the customary code of polite behavior in society or among
members of a particular profession or group.
DETERIORATE – (verb) become progressively worse.
QUESTIONNAIRE – (noun) a set of printed or written questions with a choice of
answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.
CHRYSANTHEMUM – (noun) a plant of the daisy family with brightly colored
ornamental flowers, existing in many cultivated varieties.
MINUSCULE – (adj.) extremely small; tiny
ARDUOUS – (adj.) involving or requiring strenuous effort; difficult and tiring.
STATUS QUO – (noun) the existing state of affairs, especially regarding social or
political issues.
FOULARD – (noun) a thin, soft material of silk or silk and cotton, typically having a
printed pattern.

AVERAGE ROUND
REPERTIORE – (noun) a stock of plays, dances, or pieces that accompany or a
performer knows or is prepared to perform.
NAUSEOUS – (adj.) causing nausea; offensive to the taste or smell’ disgusting,
repellent, or offensive.
AMBIGUOUS – (adj.) open to more than one interpretation; having a double
meaning.
ATELIER – (noun) a workshop or studio, especially one used by an artist or
designer.
POIGNANT – (adj.) evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret.
SYNECDOCHE – (noun) a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the
whole or vice versa. As in Cleveland won by six nuns (meaning “Cleveland’s
baseball team”).
PARAPHERNALIA – (noun) miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment
needed for a particular activity.
ONOMATOPOEIA – (noun) the formation of a word from a sound associated with
what is named.
ALBUMEN – (noun) egg white, or the protein contained in it.
SEMAPHORE – (noun) a system of sending messages by holding the arms or two
flags or poles in certain positions according to an alphabetic code.

DIFFICULT ROUND
BOLOGNA – (noun) a large smoked, seasoned sausage made of various meats,
especially beef and pork.
PTERODACTYL – (noun) a pterosaur of the late Jurassic period, with a long
slender head and neck and a very short tail.
SCHAPPE – (noun) a yarn or fabric of spun silk also: an imitation of it (as in rayon
or nylon).
XANTHOSIS – (noun) a yellow discoloration of the skin from abnormal causes. A
virus disease of the strawberry plant characterized by crinkling and curling, yellowing
and dwarfing of the leaves, and stunting of the entire plant.
SESQUIPEDALIAN – (adj.) given to or characterized by the use of long words.
PHRONTISTERY – (noun) an establishment for study and learning (sometimes
including modern universities)
INSOUCIANT – (adj.) showing a casual lack of concern; indifferent
CYMOTRICHOUS – (adj.) having a wavy hair.
VIVISEPULTURE – (noun) the act or practice of burying alive.
