Surface Tension: Conclusion and Recommendation

Surface tension occurs when a surface of a liquid had a contact with a gas,
and it acts as an elastic thin sheet. Surface tension can also be termed as
“interface tension” when the surface is between two liquids. There are various
forces such as Van der Waals forces that causes surface tension. Van der Waals
forces draw the liquid particles together. Along the surface, the particles are
pulled toward the rest of the liquid. Surface tension can also be defined as the
ratio of the surface force (F) to the length along with the force acts. In this
experiment, the main objective is for the students to be able to determine the
surface tension of sample liquids using the capillary rise method. The reagents to
be tested were distilled water, benzene, methanol, chloroform, and an unknown
liquid. After following the procedures carefully, the group was able to produce a
value of surface tension_____, _____, _____, _____, and _____ for distilled
water, benzene, methanol, chloroform, and unknown liquid respectively.
Inaccuracy of the results is still possible due to minimal errors and problems
encountered by the group like using an undried capillary tube from the previous
reagents for the preceding reagents. However, for the future researchers and
students of Physical chemistry to be able to obtain a more accurate result they
should follow the procedures more carefully and intelligently. Asking for the
guidance of the instructor when in doubt is a must. The members of the group
should also be cooperative and intelligent in doing this experiment to produce a
more satisfying outcome.
