Acute complications result from hyperthermia, pulmonary edema, cardiac arrhythmias, and

cardiovascular collapse. Long-term complications include epilepsy (20% to 40%),

encephalopathy (6% to 15%), and focal neurologic deficits (9% to 11%).

Status epilepticus (SE) is a single seizure lasting more than five minutes or two or more
seizures within a five-minute period without the person returning to normal between them.
Previous definitions used a 30-minute time limit.
