15 The following sizes of sampling tubes are available in market CO1/10

Sample No. I II III
Outer Diameter 75 110 50
(mm)
Inner Diameter 72 107 35
(mm)
Length (mm) 600 600 600
Out of these which one would you select for obtaining undisturbed soil sample
from a bore hole, apply appropriate technique to get best undisturbed sample.
16 With a neat sketch briefly explain the location of water table by Hvorslev’s CO1/10
method.
17 A sampling tube has inner diameter 70mm and that of a cutting edge is equal to CO1/10
68mm. There outer diameters are 72mm and 74mm respectively. Determine the
inside clearance, outside clearance and area ratio of the sampler. This tube is
pushed at bottom of a borehole to a distance of 550mm and length of sample
covered is 80mm. Find the recovery ratio.
18 In a site investigation to determine the depth of ground water table, the water in a CO1/10
borehole was bailed to a depth of 8m below the ground level and the recorded
rise in the water level in the borehole are as follows: h 1 = 50cm in the first 24
hours, h2 = 30cm in the second 24 hours, h3 = 20cm in the third 24 hours. Using
Hvorslev’s method, compute the depth of the ground water table at that site from
the measured data.
19 What is bore hole log? List the information to be recorded in a bore hole log. CO1/10

20 What are the methods available for dewatering? Explain dewatering by well CO1/10
point system.
50 % of MODULE 2
21 What are the assumptions made in deriving Boussinesq’s equation? What are its CO2/10
limitation?
22 Derive an expression for vertical pressure under a uniformly loaded circular area CO2/10
along vertical symmetrical axis.
23 Derive the expression for vertical stress and shear stress by using Boussinesq’s CO2/10
theory. Also compare this theory with Westergaard’s theory.
24 What are the assumptions and limitations of Boussinesq’s and Westergaard’s CO2/10
theories of stresses in soil?
25 Distinguish between Boussinesq’s and Westergaard’s theory of stress CO2/10
distribution.
26 Explain the: 1) Pressure bulb 2) Pressure distribution on horizontal plane 3) CO2/10
Pressure distribution on vertical plane.
27 A concentrated load of 1500 KN is applied at the ground surface. Determine the CO2/10
vertical stress at a point A which is 5m directly below the load. Also calculate
the vertical stress at a point B which is at a depth of 5m but a horizontal distance
of 6m from the axis of the load.
28 A concentrated load of 3000KN acts on the surface of a homogeneous soil mass CO2/10

2) At a horizontal distance 7.5m. Use Boussinesq’s equations.
29 A load of 1000KN acts as a point load at the surface of a soil mass. Estimate the CO2/10
stress at a point of 3m below and 4m away from the point of action of the load
by Boussinesq’s formula. Compare the value with the result from westergaard’s
theory.
