The study aims to assess and compare the respondents from their perception of role,

preparedness and management towards disaster. The researchers tried to examine the

demographic profile in terms of age, gender, marital status, religion, length of service and area of

specialization.

This comparative-descriptive correlation study used a thirty (30) item questionnaire as

the main gathering tool. The said questionnaire was distributed to 99 registered nurses in

Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital in Palao, Iligan City. Data results were statistically

analyzed and interpreted using the appropriate statistical tools including the Percentage-

Frequency Distribution Method, Weighted Mean Formula and the Chi-Square Test.

The results showed that the respondents’ demographic profile revealed that majority

belonged to the group of 26-35 years old which cover 51.5% of the total population. Of the

respondents 65.7% were female and 65.7% were Catholic. In terms of their civil status, 57.6% of

v
the population is single. With regards to the length of service, Most of them have worked for the

range of 0-5 years in their present job.

It has been found out that 3.85% of the total respondents strongly agree that they are

knowledgeable on their role during disaster. 3.86% of the respondents are prepared towards

disaster and 3.83% are knowledgeable regarding on the management towards disaster. Nurses

have different perception in their role, preparedness and management towards disaster.

The researchers encourage nurses to play their role in helping community people prepare for

disasters and cope for the aftermath effects. Also, they should participate in seminars and

training to enhance their knowledge and strengthen their skills involving preparedness and

management. The researchers recommend that they should also be aware since they are the next

generation. Moreover, they should be knowledgeable what to do during and after disaster to

lessen panicking, paranoid and uncontrollable people running around. Also, the course outline

for emergency nursing especially first aid should be enhanced based on their strength and

weaknesses for them to be more prepared towards disaster.
