Observation Notes-Social and Emotional
Observation Notes-Social and Emotional
Observation:
I was able to observe Mason using a social developmental checklist and an anecdotal record. For the social
developmental checklist, there were specific tasks that Mason had to perform and I had to check either always,
usually, sometimes, or never.
Mason was able to complete only two always social developments. Those were: plays with similar toys to
other’s and gains access to engaging with others in a positive manner.
o I observed Mason playing with a marble maze game by himself. Another student joined him and
they were trying to problem-solve on how to balance it and taking turns.
Mason was able to complete several usually social developments. Those were: makes contact and plays
with other children, likes to be accepted by others, gives and takes while interacting with peers, interacts
in harmony with peers, shares possessions/toys, and respects others’ rights.
o Mason will play well with his peers especially if they join him.
Mason was able to complete sometimes social developments. Those were: spends time watching others
play, sees things from another child’s point of view, and strives for independence.
o Mason has a hard time with “striving for independence”. He needs assistance and adult approval
when he is completing tasks or completing self-help skills. (zipping, putting on shoes, etc.)
The anecdotal record I was able to observe Mason play with the sensory table. He did play alone for a
few minutes by himself, then another child joined him.
o When the child joined him, that is when he started to become more vocal and describing what he
was doing, seeing, and feeling.
