Unit 12 Fractions

Content and Language Objective:

We can determine what the equal partitions and unequal partitions and create pictures to show my
understanding by drawing pictures in our journals.

Vocabulary:fractions, whole, one/half, one/fourth, one quarter, partitioned, equal parts, unequal parts, fair share

Guiding Questions:

 How can a two-dimensional shape be partitioned in more than one way?

 What strategies can be used to determine if parts of a whole are equal or
unequal?
 How can we describe a shape that has been partitioned?
 How does identifying the whole affect describing the parts?
 What is a whole?
 What is a half?
 What is a fourth? quarter?
 What is a numerator?
 What is a denominator?

Lesson Cycle:

Warm-Up Activity:
5-day-math
Calendar
Review time to the half hour. Students have to either make a given time or write the time given on an
analog clock

Anticipatory Set:

Read The Lion’s Share to introduce concept of fractions Halves and Doubles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8b0brKPf_g

Teacher Input (Direct Teach):

Go Math 16.1 Equal and Unequal Parts

Anchor Charts. Have students either glue into journals or draw in their journals as you put the examples up on the
anchor chart.

Guided Practice: Pair  Activity 1-matches verb 1:

Unit 5 Day 12
Distinguish between equal and not equal. Students will sort shapes together with the teacher in a pocket chart to show equal and
not equal.

Play game Fair Share from Think Up pg 205 Teacher vs. Students (Can do in stations as well)

Independent Practice: Pair Activity 2-matches verb 2.

Make it Fair: students draw shapes in half and color one half.

Closure:
Have students draw a  picture of a shape in their journals to show it partitioned into
equal and a shape to show unequal parts. (Use for reflection piece as well)

For grade levels doing Best Practices add the following:

Conceptual Refinement:
Using manipulatives to help students grasp concepts of fractions.

Independent Practice Activity  (For rest of class not in CR):

What makes the shape equally partitioned/divided? What makes the shape not equally
partitioned/divided?
