An Overview of Sleep Quality in Elderly in Posbindu X Guji Baru

The elderly period is characterized by a gradual decline in physical and psychological
function called the aging process. As a person ages, the need of sleep will also decrease. In elderly, the sleep time spent can decrease up to 5-6 hours per day. Sleep is an active process which consist of paradoxical period of sleep and alternating slow waves. Sleep is divided into two phases, which is Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase. The elderly tend going to bed earlier than adults, but the elderly need longer time to fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. Sleep quality is a condition experienced by a person which results in freshness and fitness upon awakening. A person's sleep quality can be assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. The higher the score obtained, the worse the sleep quality resulted. Based on the research study, there are 41 respondents as much as 83.7% of all samples (49 respondents) had poor sleep quality. Based on the age group range, poor sleep quality is found in 39 respondents (79.6%) within age 60 to 74 years. Based on gender, it is found that poor sleep quality is higher in women which are 36 respondents (73.4%), while based on marital status, there are 22 respondents (44.9%) is widowed.
