LATIHAN TERMODINAMIKA HUKUM 2_2019

1. A 0.4m3 rigid tank is filled with saturated liquid water at 200 oC.
A valve at the bottom of the tank is now opened, and one-half of
the total mass is withdrawn from the tank in liquid form. Heat is
transferred to water from a source at 250 oC so that the
temperature in the tank remains constant. Determine (a) the
amount of heat transfer and (b) the total entropy generation for
this process.

SOLUTION :

The initial and the final masses in the tank are

Now we determine the final internal energy and entropy,

The heat transfer during this process is determined by substituting

these values into the energy balance equation,
(b) The total entropy generation is determined by considering a
combined system that includes the tank and the heat source.
Noting that no heat crosses the boundaries of this combined
system and no mass enters, the entropy balance for it can
be expressed as

Therefore, the total entropy generated during the process is

EXERCISES:

1. In a Rankine Cycle, steam at 6.89 MPa, 516 oC enters the turbine

with an initial velocity of 30.48 m/sec and leaves at 20.68 kPa with a
velocity of 91.44 m/sec. If the mass flow rate of the steam is 136.078
kg/hr, Compute the thermal efficiency of the cycle and the net power
produced in horse power.

2. An ideal vapor-compression refrigeration cycle operates at steady

state with Refrigerant 134a as the working fluid. Saturated vapor enters
the compressor at -10 oC, and saturated liquid leaves the condenser at 28
oC. The mass flow rate of refrigerant is 5 kg/min. Determine
a. the compressor power, in kW.
b. the refrigerating capacity, in tons.
c. the coefficient of performance.
