SWBAT: Finish Hairspray and get to know the material for our show better.

5 min: Do Now: Circle. We will go over the norms of circle and everyone will have an opportunity
to share how their day/week/weekend is going/went.

30 min: Continue watching Hairspray while pausing during specific sections to discuss the
following:
● The purpose of music in theater
● Camp
● “How they did it” in terms of creating the different locations
● Stage Management

40 min: We will listen to a few key songs that will be included in our revue. Students will be
expected to listen to each song and determine how they believe they could feasibly design each
of the three panels using initial sketch work. The songs/locations will include the following:
● I Know Where I’ve Been - Hairspray - Motormouth Maybelle’s Record Shop
● Till We Reach That Day - Ragtime - Sarah’s Funeral
● Nothing - A Chorus Line - Blank Stage
● So Long Dearie - Hello, Dolly! - The Courthouse
● Unlikely Lovers - Falsettos - Hospital Bed
● The Impossible Dream - Man of La Mancha - The dungeon
● Home - The Wiz - Oz into Kansas

20 min: The audition process - what does it mean? What does it look like? How are techies
involved?
As an introduction to Stage Management, I will introduce the students to the audition process in
terms of what is expected of them during this time.
Step 1: Choosing a song
Step 2: Choosing your clothes
Step 3: The audition room
Step 4: What is a stage manager’s role in the process?
Step 5: Casting
Later, we will put ourselves in a scenario of where we need to cast people and put our director
hats on, and our stage manager hats on. This scenario will be completely made up, with fake
people, but still using a real show. (Les Miserables).
