CARBON FOOTPRINT

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the

environment, and in particular climate change.

TWO TYPES OF CARBON FOOTPRINT

1. PRIMARY CARBON FOOTPRINT
 This is a measure of how much carbon dioxide is given out directly
by energy consumption so you are in control of this type of carbon
footprint.
2. SECONDARY CARBON FOOTPRINT
 This is a measure of carbon dioxide given out that is not under
your control by products you consume.

MAIN EFFECTS
 CLIMATE CHANGE
 Is the ultimate effect of large carbon footprints. greenhouse gases,
whether natural or human-produced. Contribute to the warming of
the planet.

 DEPLETION OF RESOURCES
 Large carbon footprints deplete resources on large and small scales
from a country’s deforestation activities to one home’s increased
use of air conditioning.
THE CARBON CYCLE
Levels of carbon dioxide ion the atmosphere are controlled in nature by a
process known as the “carbon cycle”. The movement of carbon is controlled
between the air, land, and water by natural processes such as photosynthesis,
respiration and decay.
QUESTIONS:

 What are the principle gases entering the atmosphere from human
activities?

1. carbon Dioxide (co2)

2. Methane (cH4)
3. Nitrous oxides (N2o)
4. Fluorinated gases (HFCs & PFCs)

 The term “carbon footprint” means the amount of carbon dioxide that
individual, group or organization lets into the atmosphere in a certain
time frame.
