POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES College of Engineering CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT ENSC 20084 MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES 2nd Semester, AY 2019-2020 LONG EXAMINATION NO. 2 (TAKE-HOME) DIRECTIONS: 1. Do not write anything in this examination sheet. 2. Solve all problems and show your complete solution, 3. ‘Sketch necessary free-body diagrams (FBD). 4, Cheating is never an option. PROBLEM NO. 1 Determine the ratio of the weight of the solid shaft over the weight of the hollow shaft having the following characteristics and properties: + the first shaft isa solid circular section. + the second shaft is hollow circular section, whose outside diameter is 1.50 of the inside diameter. * the two shafts are subjected to the same torque. + they have the same lengths and composed of the same material. + the maximum shear stress that will develop in each shaft is the same, PROBLEM NO. 2 ‘A 402.307 horsepower is being transmitted at 20.944 radians per second. Determine the outside diameter of a hollow shaft whose thickness is 20 mm if the shear strain due to torsion is not to exceed 1/1163, The modulus of rigidity G = 80000 MPa. Express your answer to the nearest ‘safe"10 mm, Note: 1 hp = 745.70 watts PROBLEM NO. 3 If a solid circular shaft transmits 300 KW at 26.18 radians per second, determine the required diameter. The allowable shear stress and the angle of twist are 30 MPa and 1° in a shaft length of 2 m, respectively. The modulus of rigidity G = 100 GPa. Express answer to the nearest safe” 25 mm. PROBLEM NO. 4 Determine the outside diameter of a hollow shaft whose inside diameter is 2/5 of its outside diameter if the shaft is rotating at 100 rev/min and transmitting a power of 562.5 KW. The allowable shear stress and the angle of twist are 60 MPa and 1.3° in a shaft length of 2.5 m, respectively. The mean torque is 80% of the maximum torque. Use modulus of rigidity G = 90000 MPa. Note: Mean torque is the torque needed to transmit the given power. Maximum torque is the torque that the material can carry. PROBLEM NO. 5 ‘A 40-mm diameter, 500-mm length shaft is drilled, for a part of its length L;, to a 20 mm diameter and for the remaining length L; to a 30 mm diameter drill hole. If the allowable shear stress is 80 MPa, find the maximum power that the shaft can transmit at a speed of 200 rev/min, If the angle of twist in the length of 20 mm diameter rill hole is equal to that in the 30 mm diameter drill hole, find the length of the shaft that has been drilled to 20 mm and 30 mm diameter. PROBLEM NO. 6 A helical spring has a stiffness of 1500 N/m under a load of 60 N. The maximum shearing stress produced in the wire of the spring is 125 MPa. The solid length of the spring is given as 5 cm. Find the diameter of the wire, the mean diameter of the coil, and the number of coils required. Use G = 45 GPa. Note: The solid length of the spring means the distance between the coils when the coils are touching each other. There is no gap between the coils. The solid length is given by Solid length = No. of coils x dia. of wire = 1n xd PROBLEM NO. 7 AA flanged bolt coupling connects two shafts, The bolt circle diameter is 250 mm in which there are 12 bolts. The allowable shear stress is 55 MPa in the shafts and 20 MPa in the bolts. One shaft is hollow with outside diameter of 100 mm, while the other one is solid of diameter 50 mm. Determine the ratio of the outside and inside diameter of the hollow shaft and the bolt diameter so that both shafts and the flanged bolt coupling are having the same strength in torsion.
