Realizations

The Miracle in Cell No. 7 is a Korean movie about Yonggoo who is mentally
incapable but happily takes care of his little daughter Yeseung. He wants to buy her a
Sailor Moon schoolbag just to makes her little daughter happy. One day while they go to
their routine He follows a little girl who can show him a shop that still sells it. But the
girl dies, apparently by a hit to the head with a brick, and Yonggoo is standing above
her and has partly undressed her when a witness sees him. For the police and the
media, the case is obvious right away, even the more as the victim is the daughter of
the police commissioner and results need to be available as soon as possible.
In prison Yonggoo is treated everything but friendly because of his crime as
well, but his cellmates led by Yangho (Oh Dalsoo) soon find outthat the death of the girl
actually was just an unfortunate accident and that the police forced the mentally
handicapped man to make a false confession by beating him and making promises.
Even the prison warden (Jeong Jinyeong) has doubts about Yonggoo's guilt. Somehow
Yonggoo's newfriends then manage to smuggle Yeseung into prison. However, the two
haven't much time together left as Yonggoo is on death row (Asian Movie Web). The
movie ended with Yeseung growing up to be a lawyer, and the case of Yonggoo his
father was reexamined. From being sentenced to death, Yonggoo was pronounced to
be not guilty instead. It was, however, years too late to save his life.
The reason for the huge success of this movie for me, is its magic to trigger two
opposite emotions in the viewers—the heartwarming and anger. Heartwarming in the
sense that the film showed how the father loved his daughter beyond anything else.
Even during his last few moments before his execution, he still came back to be with his
daughter even just for a short while. The movie, on the other hand, prompted the feeling
of anger within the audience for the unjust and unfair outcome of the story. The depth of
the plot made it possible for the viewers to come out of the movie houses with plenty of
life lessons which they can live out on their daily lives
