the players are hired by a house to rob something, but it's a setup, and the players are

caught by the police and jailed, only to be freed by the same house that hired them.
The players are now in their debt. The house wants them to find out how a rival
house is venturing further into the mournland than anyone else can, and to steal the
method if possible.

The players eventually identify a secret lab containing an advanced warforged made
of composite materials unlike anything they've seen before, along with prototype suits
designed to withstand the corrosive atmosphere of the mournland and the inventor's
journal. The warforged begs the players to release it from its magical bonds in
exchange for the secrets of the suits, but instead activates a self-destruct device,
destroying the entire site.

Using the journal, the house scientists recreate the prototype suits, and the players
enter the mournland to discover an entire civilization of warforged living in secret.
The device that caused the mourning was the original warforge, that malfunctioned
after producing the first truly sentient warforged. In the years that followed the
mourning, the first warforged fixed the forge and started to make more of his kind.
Over time, the population split into three factions, ones that wants to reintegrate with
humans, one that wants to continue to live in hiding, and one that wants to conquer
the humans. They can use the warforge to either fix or enhance the mourning, and the
arrival of the players means they can no longer afford to live in secret.
