There are design rules to help you
Tandscape your y:
'd, Repetition, line, balance,
flow. You name it, there's probably a rule for it.
Do you have to follow any of them? Nope.
Can you grow veggies in the front yard
because that's the best place to put pepper
plants) That's what I did last year. The plants’
shiny leaves fit right in with the roses and
petunias, and the green, red, gold, and purple
peppers made beautiful color accents from late
summer until fall. And they tasted great—just
the same as they would have if they'd been
grown in the veggie garden
Your yard is your yard. Unless neighborhood
association rules or city ordinances outlaw
your choices, you can have what you want.
You won't find many rules in this magazine
We've assembled landscapes we think will
ingpire you, We've made some suggestions to
make the work easier and more fun. If you do
find something that sounds like a rule vo you,
feel free to break i.
Ifyou want it, make it happen.

The star of the landscape is a fruit and vegetable
garden decorated with flowering plants. Tucked into
a1 small plateau on the side of a hill, the diversity of
the mixed plantings adds to the spectacular view and
promotes organic gardening techniques, Some plants,
such as Queen Anne’s lace and dill, attract beneficial
insects, while marigolds, onions, and garlic repel bad
bugs, contributing to a pesticide-free garden,
Orderly raised beds contain the vigorous plants, The
frames hold quick-draining soil that is friendly to the
roots of most edibles, Easy-to- grow annual and perennial
flowers planted in inviting drifts help secure the hillside.
The plants also mingle among the steps leading to the
vegetable garden and color the landscape year-round.
