A. Background of the Study
Reading is an important skill in a complex society. It is a requirement whether one is a
student, a teacher, a parent or a worker whose job does not even require critical reading. A
number of daily activities, i.e., reading signage, filling out forms, interpreting maps, charts and
symbols, following directions, and even eating in a restaurant require reading. Experts in reading
say that reading is a process of thinking, evaluating, imagining, reasoning, and problem solving.
A competent reader is expected to be able to perform these activities with sensible proficiency. It
is composed of skills to recognize printed texts, understand the meaning, and form sensible
knowledge and abilities starting from simple recognition of words to association of past
experiences to printed forms which meanings are grasped, interpreted and applied.
According to James Lowell (2001), “reading is the key which admits us to the world of
thought, fancy, and imagination. It enables us to see with keenest eyes, hear with the finest ears,
and listen to the sweetest voice of all times,” (p.46). In school, a great deal of schoolwork
depends on the ability to read. Literature, Mathematics, Science -- to name but a few -- require
understanding not just the words, but more so, the content. ---NAME OF THE MEMBER WHO

Learning to read and comprehending what one is reading does not just happen. They have
to be taught through systematic, organized instruction. Reading is a skill which is built upon
through stages.
Reading bridges the author and the reader. Strang (1976) affirmed that authors convey
messages to their readers. It is a skill that helps man to discover and address his need to
understand his existence. It stimulates him to further investigate and unravel the mysteries of
nature. Furthermore, it brings man into the world of thought and imagination. This takes him to
the process which enables him to acquire a deeper understanding of reality. --- NOTMWDT
Slavin (1994) says that we can predict, with reasonable accuracy, students’ future
academic success by their reading level at the end of third grade. Surveys of adolescents and
young adults with criminal records indicate that at least half have reading difficulties. Some
states in America actually predict their future need for prisons by fourth-grade reading failure
rates. ---NOTMWDT
