Developments in the History of Midwifery & Education in Singapore -


The development of midwifery in Singapore aims to reduce MMR and IMR by
placing village midwives. They have basic junior high school + nurses + 1 year
midwife school.

Midwife schools in Singapore began in 1912 midwifery education here


with basic nursing school for 3 years + 6 months of midwife education. he
purpose of this education is to improve midwifery and neonatal services but at
that time problems arose because there was still a lack of midwives and
midwives were only able to provide normal childbirth assistance, not ready if
there is an emergency so that it can be concluded that the quality of midwives is
still unsatisfactory. In 1987 there were efforts to improve midwife services and
education, organize and start changing the situation.

Singapore is a country that firmly believes that midwife education must


be carried out separately from nurse education. According to Singapore, these
two fields require different attitudes and skills. Treatment generally works
hierarchically in hospitals under supervision while midwives are expected to
work independently in the community. The first midwife education academy in
1861 at Termasek University Hospital. The second academy was opened in 1882
in Singapore and the third in 1913 at the Academy. Initially the midwife's
education was 2 years, then it became 3 years and since 1994 it became 4 years.
His education was based on high school. The main task of midwives in Singapore
is normal and refers to abnormal conditions to obstetricians.
