The electrolyte in the battery decrease as it generates bubbles, in addition
to natural evaporation. Check the level of electrolyte in all battery cells
periodically and, as necessary, add distilled water until it comes to the
upper level line. Do not add dilute sulfuric acid in ordinary maintenance.
Lack of electrolyte causes sulfation on the plates and degrades separators.
In contrast, too much electrolyte spills from the vent hole and many damage
device, etc. Always keep the electrolyte within the specified level.

Charge the battery at a constant current 1/10 of its 5 hours rate capacity -
UQtil all cells produce many bubbles, and until three or more consecutive
reading of the terminal voltage and specific gravity taken every 30 minutes
show no increase and its electrolyte shows the maximum' specific gravity.
This method is very effective when the discharged ampere-hour of the battery
is known because the charging rate can be determined before - hand - typically
120 - 130% of discharged ampere-hour. Do not forget to disconnect the charging
power source when the battery is completely charged, or it will continue feed-
ing the same amount of current to the battery, overcharging the battery.

Charge the battery at a constant current 1/10 of its 5 hours rate capacity.
Once the battery reads 14.5 - 15V, it will be subsequential charged at this
voltage;' In other words, the battery is charged at a constant current until
its capacity is recovered to 80 - 90% and then at a constant voltage with a
gradually decreasing current.
This method has an advantage in that damage to the battery is fairly small
even if the charging source is left disconnected after complection of a full
charge.

Almost of all the commercially available battery chargers are designed to
perform in this mode.
Before starting charge, set the charger output for 1/3 - 1/5 of the 5 hours
rate capacity of battery. -

- 30-
The c~arging characteristics of modified constant potential charge are similar
to those of the constant potential current regulated charge.
However, during this charging process the charge voltage rises as the charging
current decreases since this kind of battery chargers are not equipped with
regulation circuits that would otherwise maintain the charging voltage and
current at a constant level.
In this charging system, when the supply voltage to the charger and the
battery ambient temperature drastically change, caution is necessary in that
an excessive flow of the current causes the battery damage.
