INTRODUCTION

Around the world one of the biggest causes of death has been due to diseases or epidemics that
affect a community. For this reason there is a branch of medicine called epidemiology is a
scientific discipline that studies diseases that affect members of a community or the community
in general in a certain area or site.

Thanks to epidemiology we have been able to study and discover many diseases that have
affected people and have been treated in time, to be able to solve the problem before it was too
late. For this reason, an essay that talks about epidemiology and its importance in occupational
health is shown below.

OBJETIVES

Overall objetive:

 Take into account the significance and importance of epidemiology in occupational

health.

Especific objetive:
 Read the article importance the importance of epidemiology in occupational health.
 Perform a two-page essay on said article.

EPIDEMIOLOGY AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Epidemiology is a study that helps to identify the different diseases and all kinds of phenomena
related to health, not only of people but also of animals since epidemiology also studies the
above mentioned; which are affected in a specific region and time. Epidemiology originated
through the study of outbreaks caused by transmissible and noncommunicable infectious
diseases, hence its name, analyzing them by various methods. One of them is demography
(science that studies human populations, their dimension, structure, evolution and
characteristics). general.) and statistics (studies the variability, as well as the random process that
generates it following laws of probability.)

There are several types of epidemiology:

1- DESCRIPTIVE EPIDEMIOLOGY describes the epidemiological in time, place and

person, quantifying the frequency and distribution of the phenomenon.
2- 2- ANALYTICAL EPIDEMIOLOGY seeks, through observation or experimentation, to
establish possible causal relationships between factors to which people and populations
are exposed and the diseases they present.
3- EXPERIMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY seeks, through observation or experimentation, to
establish possible causal relationships between factors to which people and populations
are exposed and the diseases they present.

In the study of occupational health epidemiology is basic since it is used to reduce the risk of
infection or any other health problem, just by studying the cases and doing research on the
probabilities and statistics, thus being able to generate hypotheses that in the end, they give true
and accurate results to the community that is required in order to reduce the risk or implement
controls at the source so that the members of the company or community do not contract some
type of problem that affects their normal state of health.

This study is an important part of public health, as its objective is to provide accurate
information of what is investigated in case of outbreaks of potentially highly infectious diseases

that would threaten the welfare of the population, community or part of it. The above is carried
out through hypotheses that help to discover risk factors, define if it is a disease that can be
treated, cure or control, to generate plans that help prevent and minimize the acquisition of
diseases, power evaluate the community and thus generate plans in order to improve the health
level of the population.

In other words, epidemiology is the key tool in occupational health, since it helps to analyze the
possible causes of occupational accidents as well as the possible causes of occupational diseases;
It also helps determine the most common causes of absenteeism by certain trades or a certain
company.

Epidemiology helps us to implement control measures in relation to certain diseases, such as, for
example, the morbid obesity of officials of a certain company, because with this tool we find the
determining causes that lead to suffering from this disease, in order to implement measures of
control to reduce the consequences it causes on the productivity and health of each worker; After
the control measures have worked, one could say that one could be talking about a total
elimination of the risk factor.

Epidemiology allows us to monitor both the work environment and the health of the workers
themselves; As for the monitoring of the working environment, it measures the concentrations of
pollutants in the environment in order to determine the exposure levels of the physical, chemical
or biological agents to which the officials are exposed, since can analyze the relationship
between the exposure and effect on health, in addition to the level of danger of the pollutant.
With the above, the necessary and adequate individual protection controls that can be
implemented in each official are determined.

Regarding the surveillance of workers, these are periodic medical examinations that allow
epidemiology as such, to make analyzes to know what type of affectation in the body have
suffered workers exposed to contaminants of considerable levels of dangerousness.

CONCLUSIONS

From the above we can conclude that epidemiology is the main tool in occupational health, to
determine the causes of diseases that affect the productivity and health of officials of a certain
company, because it also helps to establish general and individual control measures , to be able
to counteract and reduce possible damage to health and work environment. Through studies and
analysis of such cases that may occur in a given place and time, epidemiology allows us to
identify the risk factors that affect the welfare of a population or workers; With this we can be
prepared for difficult situations in terms of high contagious diseases.
