ito Za Well Hello There!

in ‘We wish you a merry Christmas…we wish you ...and a happy new year’…the tradi tional
Ed na

carol sung by many every year…

Can you believe it i s December 2010?

Ni

This year has gone by and it’s a few weeks away from 2011. Let me just say this, 2010 has
been the most bizarre year for all, the recession, changes in climate, people, companies,
friends, work scenarios, you name it, i t has been the main focus in everyone’s lives. So, we at
ITK (the old -Fringe-mag) went through major transformations too, but all very good ones.

ITK magazine and ITK media is who we are and what we will remain for the next lifetime.

So, we chatted with Undecova- fabulous South African designers, who design very cool
relaxed wear in SA, I have to admit, going through those images were rather difficult, a lot of
gorgeous looking guys and girls… and once again it seems we are having a partially naked
issue, it is summer after all, or not? Ha ha! If you are going to be prudish about skin, wel l then
don’t read this!

We also caught up with The Dirty Skirts, so have a read and hear what the boys have to say,
plus Die Antwoord has been hitting the international scene with their ZEFILISCIOUS….vibes, we
have some interesting informati on on them too…so happy reading.

You know, thi s year may have been crazy on different levels for many, but one thing is for
sure, 2011 brings a whole new year, a whole lot of new experiences Yeah!

Remember to visit us…ITKMAG.COM, we have a new website, a new look and we will most
certainly be keeping you in the know with what is happening.

Take Care, have a good Christmas, have a good New Year’s Eve and Happy 2011
DARLINGS!!!!

ITK MAG recently caught up with South African
music group The Dirty Skirts- this is what they
had to say…

ITK MAG : Hi boys, I am really upset about the interview as not sure w hat is going wit h my skype, but
anyhow… how are you all doing?

Jeremy: Good thanks

David: Boner
Maurice: Good.
Mark: Good

ITKMAG: Just give me a brief introduction to your role in the band.

Jeremy: Limbic System/Feminine side

David: The Cerebrum/Mouth
Maurice: The Cerebellum/Masculine side
Mark: Brain Stem/Basic li fe functions skills

ITKMAG: So, tell us, what are you currently busy with? Collectively as a team? Individually?

Jeremy: Writing a new Dirty Skirts album. Loving our new creative freedom. Writing a solo piano
album.
David: There is a heap of considerations attached to releasing an al bum. So we are reviewing
studios, tal ki ng to producers, engaging our label and figuring out how to move the songs forward.
Mark: Writing an album, enjoying being a creative indivi dual again.

ITKMAG: I think you have a fabulous band, when I got back from London a few years back, I
remembered hearing your music and t hinking to myself, this is a pretty cool band –my t hought being
you were international in the sense of UK formed…but then found out you were from SA…this w as
super exciting…so tell me where it began for t he Dirty Skirt s?

Jeremy: At a braai. How South African. David and I were both living NORM lives, and looking for a
way out. A way to express our musicality. I think we were bored and frustrated watching others doing
what we dreamed of.
David: The Dirty Skirts started on the bottom rung of the musi c scene. We played the “six gun
sessions”, whi ch were staged at Mercury Lounge (the bar below the venerable Mercury Live) on a
Monday night. Jess and I used to play our emerging songs as a duet with a laptop on drums. It was
tough.
Mark: *looks at David and Jess*
ITKMAG: What has been your best performance so far?

Jeremy: There have been many. My recent favourite was Rocking the Daisies thi s year, where we
chucked out 4 or 5 singles / crowd favourites and pumped out our new, somewhat edgy material.
We were all really nervous beforehand, which never really happens to us these days.
David: There have been many incredible experiences over the years. We have been fortunate to
have played alongside with Oasis, Snow Patrol and Billy Talent etc. But when I think back to endless
nights jammi ng to a packed out Independent Armchair Theater in Observatory I can only smile.
Maurice:
Mark: Redbull soundclash. I like it when people take a different look at things and the concept
behi nd the soundclash events are just great.

ITKMAG: What is your stance in the international field? Are you looking at touring more abroad?

Jeremy: Agree with Markie below. If it happens, great. But I’m not holding my breath. We have great
lives here.
David: Still dreaming of playing Glastonbury! But a relocation is highly unlikely.
Mark: We l ike being abroad so that would be fun yes. We not about to sell our house and move over
there but who would turn down a shopping trip to NYC or London?

ITKMAG: I read your biog – I am a big 80’s lover of t unes and bands from back then, just t o mention a
few The Cure, Joydivision etc…which I noticed you like, what is about bands like those that inspire
you?

Jeremy: Oh that’s our ol d bio. Yes, they were great influences. They all had very di stinct sounds, and
broke new ground.
David: The Pixies made me think very differently about what you could do wi th a song. What you
could get away wi th. And how its possi ble to be alternate with distinct pop appeal too.
Mark: *looks at Jeremy and David*

ITKMAG: Did any of you watch the movie Control? What did you think of it? I think it would’ve been
interesting to see the sound and progression of Joydivision today…

Jeremy: Yes, I did. It was ok. I li ked the Ian Curtis in my head better. I think Joy Division ended at
precisely the right ti me. There’s nothi ng more poetic and magnetic than a dead rock and roll star.
Mark: I thought it was a great fi lm. It all depends what you were trying to get out of i t though.

ITKMAG: What is the best attention you have received since the formation of your band? Any crazy
ant ics by Girls?

Jeremy: We have had a fair amount of both positive and negative attenti on since we started. You
kind of get used to being praised and dissed at the same ti me. It helps us stay balanced.
David:
Maurice:
Mark: I wouldn’t exactly term the sort of attenti on you are looking for “best” but we have
encountered some crazies on our way.

Media?

Jeremy: Assassi n?
David: Frustrated creatives in tight underwear.
Mark: Toothpaste? (Sorry are we just naming random things? If not, I don’t understand)

Random?

Jeremy: Squid i n a bikini.

David: Topless squid…
Mark: How do you think they get the holes into the Swiss cheese?
ITKMAG: Have any of you had any stalkers? ITKMAG: If you could collaborate with any international artist /producers who would it be with?

Jeremy: not really Jeremy: Producer… Win Butler from Arcade Fi re.
David: only Jess. Its creepy when I see him darting around my garden at night. Particularly in hs David: The guy who produced The Kills Midnight Boom would do it for me. Al ex someone or other. I
shaman garb. also emailed Josh Homme of QOTS A, but he was probably too busy with that small side project Them
Mark: My nephews like to chase me around the yard some times. Crooked Vultures.
Mark: *looks at jess and Dave*
ITKMAG: If yes, what mad things have t hey done?
ITKMAG: Your top tunes in your i-pod currently?
Jeremy: x
David: A sinister gargling sound and a scratching of hooves. Jeremy: Foal s - Spanish Sahara. The Arcade Fire – The Suburbs.
Mark: One of them threw a shark at me. David: Dunno.
Mark: Foals – Spanish Sahara
ITKMAG: Is all about Sex, drugs, rock and roll?
ITKMAG: It seems you boys are not just doing it for yourself, but giving back to our inspiring musicians
Jeremy: No. on the 29 October, with the Tutti World Youth Music Festival at Bergvliet high school, well done…I t hink
David: These pleasures are no longer restricted to traveling musicians. it is great that you would do such an event and inspire young muso’s….tw o of the schools are under
Mark: Yes, I mean no, umm…. privilege….your thoughts?

ITKMAG: What is the strangest place you have ever woken up in? Jeremy: It’s a priviledge to play gi gs like this.
David: Music i s a powerful force for positive change. We are happy to participate and hopefully
Jeremy: (yawn) inspire some kids to be creative and pursue their dreams.
David: The Bowery in New York City. This i s the only time I have slept in a club. Mark: *looks at Jess and Dave*
Mark: *warning serious answer* A strangers tent at rocking the daisies with 4 random people looking
over me. I run…. ITKMAG: .Boys, thank you for chatting w ith us, I look forward to seeing you all on the 29 th …just one
last thing…leave us with a Dirty Skirts point of view of your ‘Fringe’ moment…
ITKMAG:….on a more serious note…what is happening wit h your latest album?
Jeremy: What Mark says.
Jeremy: It’s in process. We are have a very liberated time writing it. Mark: Todes-ma-godes!
David: It’s going to take longer than our fans hope and expect. Sorry! It may just be for us…
Mark: *l ooks at Jess and Dave*

ITKMAG: When is it being released?

Jeremy: March 2011.

David: Hmmmm. Hopefully early next year.
Maurice:
Mark: Hopefully before March next year but no promi ses

ITKMAG: Will you be collaborating wit h any interesting international artist in time to come; it seems to
be the new trend in SA with muso’s?

Jeremy: Probably not.

David: We would be up for it with the right offer. We had a load of fun jamming with Tumi and the
Volume around the Redbull Soundclash gi g. But have never got anything together.
Mark: We really enjoying not fol lowing trends at the moment. We just kinda being ourselves and being
confident that what we are i s good enough.

BLACK EYED PEAS –BEGINNING

Firstly, Fergie is just one hot, sexy babe. I’m a woman and
I think she rocks. The Black Eyed Peas on the other hand,
they know exactly how to rock their fans. Their latest album
seems to have the fans go crazy as usual, however, I don’t
quite feel this album. Very simil ar sound and it also seems
everyone is on the ‘I had the time of my life’ remix – which
to be honest, I hate! But, hey, this is just my opinion. It’s a
summer album no doubt; buy it for your best friend. I can
see all the Camps Bay pool parties fuelled with this
(The time-Dirty Bit) mix.

MINAJ,NICKI-PINK FRIDAY
Right, I have to admit, I love music and I have a very
eclectic taste in when it comes to tunes. MINAJ’s new
album PINK FRIDAY proves to be very entertaining.
So if you are into rap/pop/ etc, then this album is one
to add to the collection. She is a new kid on the block
and has collaborated with some pretty cool artist like
Drake and Eminem and her sound quite unique.
Definitely, one of those albums you will pull out on day
when you need to listen to something a little random to
make you feel that strange happiness. If that, makes
sense, oh and be sure to bring out your lollipop and lip
gloss.

JONES,NORAH …..FEATURING
Close to my heart and oh so damn fabulous! Yes,
Norah Jones is at it again with a great album and some
very cool artist collaborations featuring, Ryan Adams,
Herbie Hancock and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band…the list
goes on. Just the perfect album to pop in your cd player
on a Sunday morning, or go for a long drive along the
ocean road…sexy sounds of Jazz…

CARS

There's no need to wait for the pay off, I'll tell you right now: the 370Z is a performance car
bargain. You would have to spend almost double its price on another car to get close to i ts
ability, and you probably wouldn't have as much fun.

That won't come as a shock to drivers of the 350Z. But I think they will be surprised by just how
much their favourite car has grown up. The car still retains its raw soul and passion for slingi ng
itself through corners, it still belts out the best V6 soundtrack in the business and it still has chunky
controls - it's just that i t does it all with a new-found level of refinement and fini shing that 350Z
owners will not recogni se.

The new styling hints as much, being more fluid, squat and muscular than the more upright and
angular 350. It's no optical illusion, either. The 370 has a 3.9-inch shorter wheelbase and is 2.7
inches shorter overal l than the 350. It al so has a rear track that's 2.2 inches wi der. If the 350 is a
piece of coal, the 370 is that same piece of coal compressed to become a diamond.

The front grille design might look like a giant catfish, but it integrates so well you can forgive i t.
There's definitely a nod to the GT-R in that roofli ne - just imagine the A-pillars being blacked out,
and you'l l see what I mean - and the original 240Z in the rear quarterlights, so there's no mi staking
who the 370's parents are.

The detailing is better too. The Z-badged indicator repeaters on the front wing are a nice touch,
the door handles have a more meaty feel to them, and the boomerang-shaped headlights are
bigger and slicker than ever before. These are things you can appreciate immediately but will
also enjoy while you own the car.

Same goes for the interior, which has been upgraded substantially. Instead of feeling like you
were sitting inside a cheap stereo, which the 350 al ways did, the 370 welcomes you into a much
better space to do your driving business. The car we drove had both the Sport and Touring
option packages, which is pretty much the top of the range, but I looked at some more lowl y
versions at the LA Show, and they weren't too bad either. The material quality on all of them is a
light year ahead of the 350's.
The main dials are still attachedto the steering column, so it doesn't matter how small or tall you No complaints whatsoever about the handling, though. We took the car along a stretch of road
are, you should be able to see them clearly. If you're fat, there's still no other option than to go I normally reserve for super cars - the last time I drove it was in an LP640 - and the new Z shone as
on a diet, or slide the seat back and stretch your arms if you want to fit behind the wheel, as the brightly as its yell ow paintwork. It works so much better than the 350, I was travelling 30mph faster
column still doesn't telescope at all. All the main controls, the wheel, the gearshift and the in the 370 and the car was just absorbing all the extra velocity. The 350's understeer has been
handbrake, retain the chunky, wieldy feeling of the original and, if you're slim (best you just lay greatly reduced, and the power oversteer is still as readil y availabl e as ever, so after a few miles
off the pies if you're thinking about a 370?) the seats suck you in to position so you feel ready to it's easy to think you're a bit of a tasty driver.
sling it violently through a series of bends.
Which you are in the 370Z. That's its real skill, flattering the dr iver , making you look better than you
There's good news in the lu ggage department too. That massively intrusive cross-brace in the are. It's sti ll the hooligan it al ways has been - it's just learned a few manners. Cheap at twice the
350 has been moved forward, so your shoppin g won't be guillotined every time you brake hard price isn't quite right, but it's not far off. The Audi TT will still crush it i n sales, but the 370Z is the
in the 370. There's less total space than in the 350, but it's worth the trade-off. Particularly as the better driver's car.
370 is significantly stiffer - the company reckons 30 per cent - front and rear, so the suspension
can do its job better and everything gets less shaken around. The ride on the 370 is now supple
and composed, not the vision-blurring experience the 350 can be.

This is partly because the 370 has been on a slimming regime, so its suspension has an easier
time. Chopping 3.9in out of its middle must have contributed massively to the 225lb weight Article By: Ernest M Gravett
saving, but with all the new stuff onboard - the safety equipment, the better materials, etc -?i t's
only around 100lb lighter than a similarly equipped 350. Still worth havin g - or, rather, not having -
though.

The V6 engine has adopted an opposite strategy, gaining as many cubes as it can possibly
handle. Called the VQ37VHR, the initials standing for Very High Revvin g, the variable-timing lump
is redlined at a teeth-jangling 7,500rpm. Max power of 332bhp is delivered at 7,000rpm, and max
torque comes in at a high 5,200rpm, so no one should be under any illu sio n how you are
supposed to drive this car: as hard as you can.

To make this thrashing process as easy as possible, Nissan has added something called Synchro
Rev Control - when you spec the Sport pack - that automatically bli ps the throttle when you
downchange to match the revs. It's a genius way of flattering the driver and keeping the car
calm through the corners, and it works flawlessly. You can switch it off if you think you can do
better, or maybe want to make the back step out, but it worked so well I left it on the entire time
I drove the car.

The one thing I didn't like about the drivetrain is the excessive vibration you feel through the
gearstick when you are thrashin g the car... which is all the time. Above 5,000rpm, the engine
really starts to get rough and transmits some nasty vibes back to the transmission. It's not a huge
problem, but the coarseness doesn't gel well with the rest of the car. It might just be an early-
model issue as we were driving pre-production prototypes, but if it's not, someone at the factory
needs to have another look at this set-up.
We decided to do something a little different this month and put together a panel of 5 men
and 5 women, who had to ask and answer one question from the opposite sex. Who knows if
this could be the solution to the battle of the sexes or will we remain clueless and continue
trying to figure each other out. This is what you had to say…

1. What exact ly is your definition of cheating? - Tanya

You said it... Simple...emotionally attaching one’s self to another person while in a relationship...a guy can
buy a gi rl a drink on a night, have sex and get lost… For a girl. She starts getting confused
and you know someone is going to cry. - Chuma

2. Do men prefer women with BIG/MEDIUM/SMALL busts and why? – Penny

Boobs are boobs, mel ons, oranges or guavas, men love boobs no matter what! I’m yet to

We said it...
come across a woman with fake breasts, personally I’m not a fan of anything fake on a
woman. Learn to love what you have, we al ready do! - Theunis

ot her people? - Andrea

Sê wat...
Yes you do fantasize about the other person when messing around it adds to the attraction,
Jy sê dit... as well as the thought about the other person i s what l eads to the thoughts coming to action
- Daryl

4. Why do guys look for hot chicks, but w hen they go out as a couple it's an issue t hat
ot her guys are appreciating the fact that she's hot and t hen he gets mad at the girl,
most of the time? - Gillian

Thing is men fall in love visually before any form emotion kicks in. So being a guy and having
your woman looking hot is a bonus and havi ng another man look at your woman can go
two ways. He is either stoked some other guy is checking out his woman, or jelousy i s an issue
for him or he just doesn’t trust you. - Cidro

5. What do men really want from a woman? Rocio

The sexiest thing about a woman is her confi dence and knowing what she wants for herself.
She looks after herself – this means put together not high mai ntenance and slutty sexy, has a
life and doesn’t wait for a man to make her “li fe”, doesn’t sleep with me immediately – shows
you have respect for yourself, be independent – i t’s very attractive, have a sense of
adventure, knows how to laugh, doesn’t try to i mpress me or others by talking about what
you do and who you know – that doesn’t interest us at all, it shows us your insecurities.
Appreciate your small boobs or cellulite – no one is perfect, men have it too. BE OKAY AND
HAPPY WITH WHO YOU ARE, WE CANT DEFINE YOU ONLY YOU CAN! - M assimo
1. When is it the right time for you to first fart in front of me? – Daryl

Ok if you just met her then it would be wrong to just let rip on the first date.

In my opinion if she makes it to the 4th date or if you make it to the 4th date with her, she has
all the right to fart. I mean, by this time you would have found out what the names of your
kids are going to be already, lol. - Andrea

2. Do girls crave sex more than they suggest? – Chuma

In my opinion women think about sex more often than they care to admit. So yes, we do at
ti mes crave it more often than we suggest. Sometimes as we get older or have children etc.
we lose interest in doing it as we feel we do not need it and some women do not even miss
it. In some societies if a woman admits to having any sort of sexual appeti te it is frowned
upon or it gives a potenti al new partner the wrong impression about her. Personally sex is
important to me and if my partners libi do goes south I will defi nitely speak up about it - Tanya

3. When you look at a man, does a woman see the man that they want him to be or do
women see us as the men that we are? – Cidro

It not that we don't see the real man, its the real man that attracts us, but rather the raw
potential that determines whether she will stay or leave for the next guy! I look for signs of a
possible future! - Gillian

4. Do women prefer their men hairy or shaven down there? - Theunis

Trimmed not shaven:-

· stubs will cause abrasions during…..
· snakes require roaming place but not a bush
· cl eanliness
- Penny

Name 5 things that are important in a relationship? – Massimo

Respect, your love, your commitment, your support and communication. -Rocio

Technology has seen some groundbreaking developments happen in such

a short period of time. Despi te of the continuous changes to bigger and
better, it remains easy to navigate and super convenient to boot. The most
noticeable change is how we li sten to music today.

Taking my own experience into consideration, the radio was a little square
box with a big round speaker situated in the centre. Soon after came the
audio cassette stereo. Aah cassettes, can anyone remember those archaic
recordable tapes? Great stereo, in fact I could record songs di rectly from
the radio and would be mildly irritated when the DJ started talking midway
through the song. Furthermore piracy was limited to a man with an eye
patch and a parrot named Polly sat snug on his shoulder that sailed the
seven seas in a dingy. Piracy of music was in fact unheard of back then.

It was at the tender age of nine when I received my first walkman; a battery
operated mobile cassette player whi ch came with my very first cassette.
New Kids on the Block to be exact…not something I am very proud of. Quite
the nifty i nvention that made a youngling like mysel f l ook pretty cool,
allowing me to listen to my one & only cassette anytime and anywhere. The
negati ve aspect here was when the battery power ran out; the music
became dissonantly satanic. I still own the sassy red walkman but not and I
repeat, not the cassette!

We saw the increase of better model s and the introduction of the CD player
few years down the line. How could a flat shiny di sc play host to any sort of
musi c? Was there a side A and a Side B? It was only until I received my very
own CD player including yet another embarrassing fi rst CD (The Backstreet
Boys) that I understood how it all worked.

We have since seen some amazing developments. MP3 players in every

shape and size have been introduced, following the enormously popul ar
iPod to uploading music directly to your mobi le phones. The continuous
evolution of technology today quite exci tes me to see the progress we will
make when it comes to listening to and uploading music i n the very near
future. Oh and FYI… a little birdie told me that New Kids on the Block and
Backstreet Boys are collaborating for a combined concert….seriously, I’m
just pointing out the irony of i t all.

Café Sofia

Well, I hope I don’t become a little on the large side, as i t seems I am hanging around all the
Wi-Fi hot spots and well, some cool spaces. One new space that has come to mind is the
Café Sofia –restaurant/coffee bar / cocktail bar restaurant. A pretty ni ce concept for
consumers, I think. It is the home away from home and the vibe about the restaurant group
extremely pleasant and just, wel l lovely. One thing the group is well known for, are the
breakfast specials they do, I mean where do you still get a good breakfast for under R25?

In this tough economi c environment, we all know, going to restaurants are not done as often
and we hardly spend loads of money like we used too. Even more so i f you are fami ly, young
family, older generation or just the usual crowd that li kes to go out and don’t want to spend
R100 on a cocktail. Yes, there are places that charge that. So, what I am really here to tell
you is the following, Café Sofia has some reall y nice offerings, firstl y, their food is good, the do
great coffees, the have Wi-Fi at all thei r branches- mostly in Cape Town of course.

On all three occasions I have visited their store, particularly the Green Point store – the
atmosphere has been fabulous. Try their French toast, banana and honey is one of my
favourite dishes, that is if you’re in a naughty mood, a lovely frappe (with some great
choices) – is the healthier option of course – or simply just a mini breakfast if you’re not that
hungry. Then guess what, if you fancy after wor k drinks, cocktails are a mere R25 during
happy hour…that is per cocktail …is that not great?….and how is this for family value….if you
have dinner or lunch at Café Sofia – kids under 10 eat for free. Now, what a great concept!

You can have a look at the Café Sofia’s official facebook page/ CAFÉ SOFIA or visit,
www.cafesofia.co.za to see all the latest events taking place. There is a lot of l ive musi c with
great up and coming artist that will perform at various Café Sofia establishments, so joi n the
page. Otherwise till next time. Happy eating and drinking plus have a good festive season.
