Outbound Tourism

Introduction

Outbound tourism comprises the activities of residents of a given country travelling to and staying in
places outside their country of residence and outside their usual environment for not more than 12
consecutive months for leisure, business and other purposes. It does not comprise of goods and services
acquired for or after the trip within the generating country. For example, a Nepali family travelling to
Australia to spend their vacation is considered as outbound tourism.

With rising levels of disposable income especially among the middle income group, the trend of Nepali
people travelling abroad is upward sloping. Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines
are the hotspots for Nepali middle-income tourists, while the upper-income group prefers Dubai,
Mauritius, China and Europe. As per the recent data, the expense made by Nepalese travelling abroad was
more than that of inbound tourist. A large numbers of outbound travelers are corporate employees and
business owners.

Globalization is the driving force for modern outbound tourism development and causes strong growth
rates and increasing competition within the industry worldwide. The increasing competition for outbound
tourists leads to destinations to focus more on specialization and product innovation in order to meet
outbound demands from different sources. Therefore, as the market matures and competition intensifies,
outbound tourism businesses have become more and more consumer-driven.

In the long run, the rise in a single tourist market in the developing countries is a significant development
with global implications. It reflects a growing trend in wider society for young people to spend a period of
time living alone or with friends before marrying and starting a family. Until a few years ago, foreign
vacation trips were limited to the rich and business executives. In recent years, a large number of middle-
class people have also started going abroad to enjoy their holidays, thanks to affordable travel packages
and easy visa processing. A growing middle class has helped develop holiday culture. Tour operators are
offering low-cost packages to fly to international destinations, resulting in a robust growth in the number
of outbound Nepali tourists. The rise in the size of middle-income group in the country and increase in the
trend of travelling abroad among them have led to the surge in overall spending made by Nepali outbound
travelers in recent years. As a startup, we see a huge prospects in outbound tourism.
Product/Services Offered
Outbound tourism mainly refers to the travelling to others country from their own residential places of
country which might be different purposes. It is an activity of travelling to others country for visit or any
works proposes. Various products are offered by us based on what kind of product and services are
offered. There are various people with various needs and wants like some may be adventure traveler or
some may be just for recreational propose, so the product we offer differentiate to some extent. Services
provided by our startup include:

Accommodation is a base of tourism industry as it is a vital and fundamental part of tourism


supply. Tourists in their travel require location where they can rest and revive during their travel.

 Food beverage and serving service:

Food and beverage services, there is increasing awareness among the general public about the
importance of healthful eating. This goes hand in hand with an increased understanding of food
production issues including environmental impacts such as pollution. So what kind of food
products is available and their quality also generally matters. We will provide our customers with
quality and healthy foods.

 Transportation services:

Transportation and travel cannot be discussed without talking tourism in consideration, but
tourism cannot thrive without travel. Transportation is an integral part of the tourism industry. It
is largely due to the improvement of transportation that tourism has expanded. A good
transportation service will make your customer happier.

 Tour agency, Tour operator and tourist guide:

As we are a startup and are in a early stage, we need assistance from different tour operators.
Tour operator is an organization, firm or company who buys individual travel components,
separately from their suppliers and combines them into a package tour, which is sold with their
own price tag to the public directly or through middlemen, is called a tour operator. For example
a group of Nepali tourists going to a trip of Thailand and Thomas Cook handle arrangement in
Thailand like as ticket reservation, hotel booking etc. then Thomas Cook is called Outbound Tour
operators in the context of Nepal. These operators are very helpful for the growth of the business.

 Cultural aspect:

The movement of persons to cultural attractions away from their normal place of residence, with
the intention to gather new information and experiences to satisfy their cultural needs, like
Istanbul, Tokyo, Thailand, India, and China all has their own cultural aspect. We will try to
interlink every customers with the culture of that country.
 Recreation and other entertainment services:

Activities such as rock climbing, bungee, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, zip line, etc are
recreational and other entertainment activities helps to grab tourism. Hence, people seeking such
adventure will be provided with adventurous activities.

 Miscellaneous tourism services:

In this sector people who travel seek for other kind of activities like financial and insurance
services, other good rental services, and other various kinds of tourism activities. Hence, it will be
our prime objective that our customer will get additional benefits and services from us.

Target Market

The disposable income of Nepalese is increasing and so is the trend of travelling among the people. The
rise in size of middle income group in the country has led to increase in outbound tourism. As a startup,
our prime focus is on those middle income groups who have high disposable income. Target market has
been divided into two halves, source market and destination market. Our source market includes:

 Corporate employees

These days corporate houses are providing attractive salary and since the trend of travelling is
increasing, travelling to foreign destination is becoming more of a habit in most of the corporate
houses. After all the stress in workplace, people want to enjoy their vacation well so that they are
again ready to take on the stress. This is why the tendency of traveling to foreign land is
increasing. Hence we shall provide attractive packages to those corporate employees to travel
abroad.

 Business Person
Business person are always traveling and are always seeking for a platform that would make their
business trip even more exciting. We have targeted these groups of people as their frequency of
traveling is high and will provide us more opportunities.

Choosing foreign land as a honeymoon destination is becoming popular among the people in our
country. Many couple would like to spend their honeymoon in foreign land. Traveling abroad
after getting married is becoming a trend in our country. And every year the number of couples
travelling abroad is also increasing. This provides great opportunities to the startups like us.

People with high income group will also be our prime focus. These types of group travels
frequently and are ready to spent more while traveling. They do love to travel to different places
every time they are on a trip. Providing them with the option of more destinations is going to
have positive impact for our business.

As discussed earlier, the size of middle income group is increasing and also is their disposable
income. Traveling abroad for refreshment is trending among the people of this group. So, these
groups of people are great prospects for startups like us.

Outbound Tourism (The 4Ps)

Nepali outbound travelers spent Rs 79.59 billion abroad in the last fiscal year against Rs 67
billion spent by foreign tourists in the country over the same period. The travel expenses of
Nepali outbound travelers in 2016-17 was an increment by 40.1 per cent compared to Rs 56.4
billion spent by Nepali outbound travelers in 2015-16.

Meanwhile, the spending of foreigners in Nepal increased by 14.6 per cent in the last fiscal year,
according to the central bank’s statistics. Foreign travelers had spent Rs 67 billion in Nepal
during fiscal 2017-18 against Rs 58.52 billion spent by foreign travelers in the country in 2016-
17. Spending made by foreign travelers in Nepal in 2015-16 was recorded at Rs 41.76 billion. It
shows that expenses of foreign visitors in the country have been increasing in recent years.

Nara Bahadur Thapa, executive director of NRB, said that the rise in the size of middle-income
group in the country and increase in the trend of travelling abroad among them have led to the
surge in overall spending made by Nepali outbound travellers in recent years.

A large number of outbound travellers are corporate employees and business owners travelling to
destinations like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, among others, as per Thapa.

About Nepal

Nepali outbound travellers spent Rs 79.59 billion abroad in the last fiscal year against Rs 67
billion spent by foreign tourists in the country over the same period.

The trend of travelling among Nepalis has gradually risen over the years, thus boosting domestic
tourism. Side by side, the trend among Nepalis going abroad for holidays has also increased
substantially in recent years.

According to data compiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Nepalis spent a total of Rs 61.49
billion on foreign holidays in the first eight months of fiscal year 2018-19.

Talking about the increasing outbound tourism, Deepak Raj Joshi, CEO of Nepal Tourism
Board, said that expanding outbound tourism is a global phenomenon. “The number of visitors
travelling to third countries is increasing globally and this trend has caught up with Nepalis too,”
he said. He further stated that increasing income level of Nepalis has also increased outbound
tourism.
These days, people prefer to travel during holidays rather than having get togethers at one certain
place,” he said, adding, “Nowadays, Nepalis who can afford to, go on foreign junkets for
holidays, while a few are also organising their wedding receptions abroad.” Moreover, travel
packages for foreign trips have also become relatively cheaper as compared to previous days and
that is another reason behind increasing outbound spending.
