Tympanometry

 Is a fast, non-invasive means of objectively assessing a client’s middle ear system.


 Medical test that measures the function and movement of the eardrum and middle ear.
 The results of tympanometry are represented on a graph, called tympanogram

Can be performed on clients of all ages.

Can be part of routine hearing test to determine middle ear problems contributing to hearing loss.

Use a 1 kHz probe tone for infants (4 months old and under) and a 226 Hz probe tone for adults.

Can also assist in:

- Monitoring chronic middle ear fluid


- Ear canal volume
- To confirm tympanic membrane perforation
- To monitor Eustachian tube function
- Infection

Contraindications for Tympanometry

- Had recent ear surgery


- Has visible blood discharge in their outer ear
- Have pain upon contact with the probe
- Has Otitis Externa
