The calculator may be operated from an internal battery or from an external A.C. adaptor, The internal battery consists of 3 x 1.5v. cells, International Size AA, The cells may be any type of disposable primary cells, or rechargeable nickel cadmium ones, Different types of cells must not be mixed at any one time. When the calculator is being operated on its internal battery separately from its A.C. adaptor, its mains/battery switch must be set to the right-hand position ("On"), When the A.C. adaptor is in use, the calculator's mains/battery switch must be set to the left-hand position ("off"). ‘The adaptor may provide either one or two D.C. supplies, according to the setting of its switch. One supply, for operating the calculator, is present whenever the adaptor is lives the second supply is only available when tho switch is set accordingly. The second supply is provided to charge the calculator's internal battery, but it must only be used if the three cells are of the nickel cadmium rechargeable type. CHARGING CURRENT SHOULD NOT BE APPLIED TO NON-RECHARGEABLE PRIMARY CELLS. IF I WERE, THE CELLS' SPAMS MIGHT SPLIT OPEN AND THEN CHEMICAL SPILLAGE COULD DAMAGE THE INTERIOR OF THE CALCULATOR, DAMAGE CAUSED BY BATTERY SPILLAGE, FOR WHATEVER REASON, IS CONSIDERED TO BE MISUSE AND SO IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE CALCULATOR GUARANTEE. To fully recharge flat nickel cadmium cells from the A.C, adaptor will normally take about 15 hours, Moderate overcharging should not harm cells which ere in good condition, but they must not be left on charge indefinitely. Nickel cadmium cell capacity will slowly reduce with age and use, but at least 500 charge/discharge cycles should be obtained before the capacity is reduced to 75% of nominal - provided that they have never been mis-used in any way. They also discharge very slowly when not in use; at 20° c., about 1% of the charge may be lost each day, but this can be recovered by recharging. In use, the current taken by the calculator varies considerably according to the number being displayed. When operating on an internal battery, the condition of the battery and its charge level will also affect the current drain, Thus it is impossible to give a precise indication of how long the calculator will operate on one charge; an average of about 6 hours may be expected with a new 500 mA/lir, battery. The calculator's display provides an indication of the need for a new or recharged battery. As the battery voltage falls with use, the display brightness also falls until eventually the digits cannot be read comfortably. At this stage of battery discharge the calculator should still calculate correctly, so it may be assumed that if the display can be read the battery charge is adequate for use. Disposable primary cells which have gone flat should always be removed from the calculator at the earliest opportunity to reduce the risk of damage from chemical spillage. CIRCULT DESCRIPTION. The circuits on the four printed circuit boards are shown separated by broken lines on the circuit diagram, The inter- connections between them are numbered, Those on the three major boards may be identified by reference to the main board assembly drawing; they are numbered 1 to 16 from top to bottom. The display board is mounted on the main board; the inter- connections between the two are numbered 1 to 17 from left te right when viewing the board as shown on the assembly drawing. The calculator has a single M.0.S./L.S.I. chip mounted in a 42 lead plastic package. Pin 1 of the package is identified by a coloured spot and when viewed from above the other connections are numbered counterclockwise from there (see M1 on main board assembly drawing). Negative logic is used. Clock generation, keyboard encoding and display decoding are internal to the chip. It requires an external clock timing resistor for frequency and temperature compensation - which is R21 (drawn below chip), At nominal clock frequency, See: the longest possible calculation takes less than 250 milli- seconds — most normal calculations take much less than that. A power-on reset signal ('PO') is provided by C4, D3 and R22 when the calculator is switched on, PO clears the registers and resets all modes in the chip. The display is a nine stage light emitting diode display. The display stages are numbered 8 to 0, left to right. Stage 8 is only used for the error sign and/or the negative sign, Stages 7 to 0 are for the maximum of eight digits to be displayed. Each stage has eight L.E.D.s, seven for the digit segments and one for a decimal point. The digit lower segments are numbered:- 1 = top, 2 = upper right, 3 right, 4 = bottom, 5 = lower left, 6 = upper left, 7 = centre; SEG P is the decimal point. The segment 1 anodes in all nine display stages are connected together and may be driven by the segment 1 driver TR1, Similarly, the segment 2 anodes may be driven by TR2, And so on. The cathodes of the eight segments in each stage are connected together and may be driven by a stage driver, For examples, TR9 is the stage 8 driver, and TR17 is the stage O driver, To light a particular segment in a particular stage, the appropriate segment and stage drivers must conduct simultaneously. In fact, the segments are pulsed and not fed with continuous current. When the calculator is waiting between calculations, the display stages are scanned sequentially from left to right. The strobe signal (STR8 to STRO) from the chip are each driven in a positive direction towards ground in turn for a timing period of approximately 280 microseconds in each 2.7 milliseconds. Note that there are nominally 20 micro- seconds gaps between adjacent strobe signals to reduce the risk of ghosting in the display, A strobe signal line being returned to ground potential will enable its associated stage driver to conduct as the latter's emitter is returned to the battery negative line (referred to, for convenience only, as the ~3v. line). At the same time as a stage's driver is enabled, any Pie o-. appropriate segment drivers are enabled by their segment lines being returned to ground. The pulses on the segment lines are a little shorter than, and contained within, those on the strobe lines ~ they are of approximately 255 microseconds duration, Note that the STR9 line does not provide @ signal for the display. The only time a signal appears on that line is during calculation; it is then fed back to the calculator according to the setting of $3. Tho other nine strobe signals disappear during calculation, so the display blacks out during that time. In addition to driving the display between calculations, six of the strobe signals are fed to the keyboard; five of them are fed to key switches. If a key is depressed, one of the five will be connected to one of the four keyboard reply lines KB1 to KB4, Which strobe signal appears on which line indicates to the chip which key has been operated and initiates the appropriate action. .If another key is depressed during a calculation it is ignored, Keybounce protection is also built into the chip. If the memory switch is set, STRO is fod by way of S2 onto the KB2 line. The -15v. supply required for the chip is provided by the convertor board, The input supplies to the calculator are connected first to this board, with the common positive connection going to GRD ('ground'). The oscillator output from TR20 collector is fed by way of D6 and charges the bottom of C1 to ~15v. with respect to ground, As the battery voltage falls as it loses its charge, stabilisation of the -15v. supply is provided by TR18, Within the battery voltage range of 2.7 to 4.5v., the -I5v. supply should remain within the range of -14.5 to -15.5v. NOT! CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN REMOVING CHIPS OR OTHER COMPONENTS FROM BOARDS IF THEY ARE TO BE RETURNED UNDER GUARANTEE, ANY REQUEST FOR COMPONENT REPLACEMENT UNDER GUARANTEE WILL ONLY BE CONSIDERED IF THE ITEM IS COMPLETE WITH ALL ITS LEADS IN THEIR NATURAL POSITIONS AND IS UNDAMAGED IN ANY WAY (ELECTRICALLY OR PHYSICALLY). ppp JAN 73.
