00:18
hey folks so I want to introduce you to
00:21
a new project that I've been working on
00:23
for the last several months this new
00:25
project will help us keep track of our
00:29
air quality here at verse on nature
00:31
programs and trails science this project
00:35
is a an air sensor an air monitor and
00:38
I'm going to show you to you right now
00:42
this tiny device is a particulate air
00:46
monitor it is manufactured by the purple
00:49
air calm purple air is a company that
00:53
it's just a group of people the
00:55
scientists who wanted to make a device
00:58
that would be affordable for everyone
01:00
that we could then use to monitor the
01:02
quality of our air specifically
01:04
particulate matter that is in our air
01:06
that can be harmful to our health how
01:10
this device works if you look up inside
01:14
you can see two little blue rectangular
01:20
devices those are small sensors and each
01:24
one has a tiny fan and a tiny laser
01:27
inside of it it pulls air in with the
01:30
fan and then passes the air over the
01:34
laser or passes the laser through the
01:36
air depending on how you want to look at
01:37
it and using the laser it detects these
01:41
particulates that are suspended in the
01:42
air as the air passes through the device
01:47
so using lasers and science we are able
01:52
to detect the particulates in the air
01:55
these particulate scan come from all
01:57
kinds of sources such as smoke from
01:59
fires pollen mold mildew spores even the
02:06
exhaust of cars tractors trucks planes
02:09
power plants and so on these particulate
02:13
sar harmful to our health and some of
02:16
them can actually pass into the blood
02:18
and then be carried to the brain and
02:20
other organs of the body and as you can
02:22
imagine that is not a good thing so we
02:25
need to keep track of these particulates
02:27
to know where their where their sources
02:29
are what direction they're drifting in
02:32
the air currents so this is why we have
02:34
become part of the clean air Carolina
02:36
Network here in North Carolina and we
02:39
are now one of the air keepers sites in
02:42
the state
02:44
I'm personally working as a volunteer
02:47
with clean air Carolina to install more
02:50
of these purple air sensors in every
02:52
county of Western North Carolina sort of
02:55
my neck of the woods here and and then
02:58
that way hopefully by installing these
03:01
units key locations in these counties it
03:04
will inspire other people like you
03:05
anyone anybody can do this to install
03:09
sensors at your home and then you can
03:12
become part of the purple air network if
03:16
you just go to purple air comm take a
03:17
look at the link here on this video you
03:20
can see how you can acquire an air
03:23
sensor and install one at your home and
03:25
become part of the network monitoring
03:27
air quality locally regionally and
03:31
nationally and of course globally so
03:34
let's do this let's help clean up our
03:36
air Thanks okay so we're back inside the
03:41
sienten Nature Center and we're taking a
03:43
look at what the students and I call
03:46
Mission Control this is a series of flat
03:50
screen monitors that was donated to us
03:52
by Bob Harris of black bear solar
03:54
Institute thanks Bob and we use it to
03:58
monitor all the systems around the
03:59
building as you can see from the top
04:01
right we have our solar array that is a
04:03
live picture from our backyard and we
04:08
have the solar arrays feeds coming from
04:10
the inverter that's the big middle
04:13
screen showing how much power we're
04:15
generating right now which happens to be
04:20
quite a bit 4,000 391 watts that's
04:25
excellent
04:26
and it shows trends over time as well as
04:31
we have weather monitoring going on up
04:33
here with trends over time live view
04:36
from the backyard as well and then down
04:40
here
04:42
current radar regionally and then of
04:46
course globally and then over here the
04:49
purple air map this is the map that
04:54
shows the stations that are installed in
04:56
our area you can see the one on our
04:59
building showing excellent air quality
05:01
now of zero that's because we've had
05:03
some recent rains and then all around us
05:06
the air is in really good condition
05:07
right now we have really clean air in
05:09
the mountains typically now we're gonna
05:13
go on a little road trip
05:14
and check out some of the other
05:16
installations that I have recently
05:18
installed other purple air monitors that
05:20
I've recently installed in Western North
05:21
Carolina I think we'll start with
05:22
Hendersonville and then in the center of
05:25
the screen after that we're gonna
05:27
journey to the west and take a take a
05:30
look at the Pisgah astronomical Research
05:32
Institute which is reading 2 right now
05:34
excellent air quality then we're going
05:36
to journey even farther to the west and
05:38
take a look at the Cherokee installation
05:41
so let's do it let's take a look and see
05:46
see how it's done
05:57
all right so I'm here at here's a bill
05:59
at the office of mountain true
06:02
installing another air sensor this one
06:06
is going to be mounted on the outside of
06:07
this window right over the street to
06:10
collect particulates here in the town of
06:12
Hendersonville North Carolina so let's
06:14
get to it
06:15
I said collect particulates it's coming
06:21
it doesn't actually collect them it
06:23
brings them in through tiny little fans
06:28
it brings in air passes that air over or
06:32
around or through or about a laser beam
06:35
or two there's two separate ones here
06:37
and then it can count the particulates
06:39
in the air and then give us a report on
06:41
the purple air comm mat on the website a
06:44
little better description yeah
06:56
yeah I think I'll put it right here here
07:06
we go we're installing one more clean
07:11
air Carolina there monitor that we'll be
07:13
able to be accessed via the purple gear
07:16
Network purple air calm until this guy
07:23
walks by here don't want it to slip and
07:25
drop it on somebody's head all right
07:28
here we go right we're installed then we
07:37
just need to plug it in and do the
07:39
internet setup all right so the sensors
07:42
installed outside we have the window
07:44
closed and locked and and we're gonna
07:46
gonna attach this wire transfer anyway
07:52
just sort of trying to get it out of the
07:54
way here
08:11
you
08:23
so I'm up here at Sperry the Pisgah
08:25
astronomical Research Institute and we
08:27
have installed another purple air air
08:29
quality monitor and it's right over here
08:33
device into the power box and power is
08:39
actually coming from solar modules down
08:42
off the side of the building we'll take
08:43
a look at a minute in a minute and I
08:45
wind turbine hopefully they're working
08:47
together to keep this little tiny sensor
08:50
online reporting the particulate matter
08:53
in the air up here on this beautiful
08:55
ridge top you can see down in the valley
08:59
one of the large radio astronomy dishes
09:03
pointed at the sky and you can see the
09:06
entire facility laid out below us so
09:10
this sensor is going to be monitoring
09:12
the air quality here on top of the ridge
09:14
at perry's I believe they call it
09:17
observation ridge you can see in the
09:20
distance top of the ridge with more
09:26
astronomical measurements measuring
09:28
devices and antennas and such and a wind
09:31
turbine this installation is powered by
09:37
solar and wind energy so hopefully it
09:41
will run all the time even when the grid
09:43
goes down in the local area so yet again
09:46
we've installed another sensor a few
09:50
more here in the next few weeks and
09:51
hopefully cover all of Western North
09:52
Carolina with air monitoring sensors to
09:54
help us monitor our air and be happier
09:57
and healthier
10:07
you
10:18
so I'm here in Cherokee on the Qualla
10:20
boundary Cherokee North Carolina by the
10:21
way and I have installed another air
10:25
sensor for clean air Carolina we
10:27
installed the purple air sensor right
10:29
outside this window overlooking a
10:30
Columbia River
10:31
take a look sensors down here to the
10:36
right and so this sensor is reporting
10:42
the air quality that the particulates in
10:45
the air coming down the river from the
10:46
beautiful gray Smokey Mountains National
10:48
Park so we now have total of three
10:51
sensors installed in Western North
10:52
Carolina and we're working our way west
10:54
so there you go that's our next sensor
10:57
installed here in Cherokee here this is
10:59
showing the sensor aerial photography
11:02
view of the location of the center here
11:05
at the Visitor Center along the side of
11:07
the kind of leftie river and a really
11:11
unique thing about this Visitor Center
11:12
also I'm going to show you next so let's
11:14
go take a look so I'm outside the
11:19
Cherokee Welcome Center now where we
11:21
installed the air sensor and I just
11:23
wanted to to bring to your attention the
11:27
awesomeness of this place so take a look
11:29
the Welcome Center has two solar trees
11:32
and one wind turbine these units were
11:36
installed in I believe around 2013 with
11:40
an EPA and Cherokee Preservation Society
11:42
grant or grant and they're making clean
11:48
energy right now and that clean energy
11:50
is going down through the wires into my
11:54
electric vehicle which you can see over
11:56
there underneath that solar tree and on
12:00
and also not just my electric vehicle is
12:04
being charged at the moment but take a
12:05
look at this to my left I'm gonna have
12:09
to make my way over there carefully
12:12
a Tesla Model S is parked here charging
12:16
right now at the new Tesla destination
12:21
charger so here in Cherokee North
12:24
Carolina we have electric vehicles all
12:28
over the place let's go over and take a
12:30
look at the ones on the other side of
12:32
the parking lot so over here under the
12:37
solar tree there's not only my leaf but
12:43
there's also one of the Air Quality
12:46
Program vehicles from here in Cherokee a
12:49
Chevrolet Volt which is a plug-in hybrid
12:52
electric vehicle beside the Volt is a
13:00
little Volkswagen Golf in this little
13:03
car yeah I know it has an internal
13:06
combustion engine but something very
13:07
special about this vehicle is they run
13:09
it on biodiesel so they're doing
13:13
everything they can here in Cherokee and
13:14
more to keep their air clean in the
13:17
beautiful Great Smoky Mountains of North
13:19
Carolina oh there goes the Tesla so over
13:25
here all from another angle you can see
13:27
the leaf and it's getting its power from
13:32
the solar arrays as well as over here on
13:34
the other side of the building the wind
13:36
turbine so thank you Cherokee for the
13:42
great work you're doing to take care of
13:44
the environment
13:55
you
14:02
I've also installed an air monitor on my
14:05
private residence you can do this as
14:07
well all you need to do is visit Clean
14:10
Air Carolina org in North Carolina or if
14:13
you live elsewhere
14:14
just visit purple air comm and you can
14:17
be part of the solution and we can work
14:19
together to clean our air
14:27
[Music]
17:13
[Laughter]
17:26
you
17:32
okay so I'm here at the Cherokee Welcome
17:35
Center on ok so here in Cherokee on the
17:43
Qualla boundary on the Eastern Band of
17:46
the Cherokee Indians land
17:53
ok so I'm here in Cherokee on the follow
17:56
me so here in Cherokee on the ok so I'm
18:09
here in Cherokee on the Qualla boundary
18:12
Carolina
