OBJECTIVES

1. To observe the characteristics of flow over a rectangular notch and a V-notch.

2. To determine the discharge coefficients of the fluid flow.
3. To plot a graph of Q2/3 against H, Log Q against Log H and C d against H on
rectangular notch. While on V-notch, to learn how to plot graph of Q2/3 against H.
4. To estimate an average value Cd of for the range of the test.
5. To compare Cd values between rectangular notch and V-notch.

METHODOLOGY

Experimental Procedures
1. Make sure the hydraulic bench pump is securely connected
2. In order to allow flow discharged back into sump tank , the collection tank drain valve
must be ensured left OPEN.
3. Set up the flow over weirs apparatus on the hydraulic bench.
4. Thumb nuts were confirmed securing the rectangular notch weir plate is fully
secured.

General Shut Down Procedures

1. Water supply is closed and hydraulic bench flow control valve are shut.
2. Empty the residue water from channel and sump tank by ensuring the drain tank
valve left open.

Experiment 1: Flow Characteristic over weirs

1. At the hydraulic bench , the weir apparatus is levelled and the rectangular notch weir
is installed.
2. The hydraulic bench flow control valve is slowly opened to allow water flow to the
channel until it discharge over the weir plate. The water level must even with the
crest of the weir.
3. The control valve is closed and wait for the water level to stabilized.
4. By using the top of the hook of the Vernier Gauge, it is set to gives a datum reading.
5. The gauge is installed in between the notch plate and stilling baffle.
6. The channel is admitted with water and the water flow is adjusted by using the
hydraulic bench flow control valve to obtain the value of heads, H.
7. The value of heads, H is recorded in every increasing of 1 cm .
8. Step 4-5 is repeated for different value of flow rate.
9. The value of flow rate is determine at the readings of volume and the time taken
using the volumetric tank.
10. The rectangular notch were replaced by the notch with v-notch.
11. All result are recorded in the table.
