Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study will be the geriatric clients in the House of Somang

conducted at 19 LPL Avenue, Levitown Subivision, Parañaque City with ages ranging 60 to 80

years old who are able to comprehend and answer the given set of questionnaires.

Research locale

The study will be conducted at the House of Somang which is run by Korean nuns based

in Paranaque in Metro Manila. The House of Somang was established in 2005 under the

supervision of Kkottognae brothers and sisters. It is a non- government institution and charitable

based residential facility for poorest of the poor elders located in Paranaque City.

Geriatric clients in the nursing home are provided with all their basic needs such as food,

clothing, medications and shelter. Included in their facilities is a nearby recreational area and a

church which they utilize for their activities and Sunday mass. The House of Somang benefits all

45 male and female geriatric clients at present.

Research Instrument

A questionnaire will be used to gather the desired data for this study. It consists of three

(3) parts:

Part I consists of the demographic profile of the respondents such as age, gender, their civil

status and their religion.

Part II consists of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual perception of the geriatric

clients living inside the nursing home

39

Part III consists of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual effect of the geriatric clients

living inside the nursing home

Parts II and III were adopted and modified by the researchers from another questionnaire

conducted by Bernal, et.al 2017, from their study entitled “Perceptions of Children in an

Orphanage and its Effects: Basis for Coping Enhancement Program”.

The questions are composed of statements on the perception of geriatric clients in a

nursing home and its effects in terms of physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects

which is answerable by yes or no.

Validation of instrument

A pilot study will be used since the questionnaire is self-made but this will still depend on

the advice of the statistician. It will be validated by 3 people, masters at their craft. Mr.

Gaudymer Lopez, a psychiatric nursing professor from UPSHD College of Nursing, Ms. Arlene

Masiado, also a psychiatric nursing professor from UPSHD College of Nursing and Ms. Clariza

Radia, the college guidance counselor, a faculty of UPHSD Guidance Counseling office. The

questions will be then translated into Tagalog by a Filipino professor, a faculty UPSHD College

of Arts and Sciences. A total of 5 random respondents will be interviewed to determine the

appropriateness of the questions.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers have done the first two steps and will do the last two steps in order for

them to collect the data that will be essential for the study:
40

1. A phone call inquiry to the administration of House of Somang was done and a letter of

permission was presented for the researchers to conduct the study.

2. After the approval of the administrations, The researchers had an initial visit to assess and

identify the respondents last January 26, 2020.

3. The researchers will distribute and discuss the letter to the respondents and state

specifically the purpose and confidentiality of the interview. A questionnaire will be presented

and thoroughly discuss each item to the respondents. The researchers will give ample time for

the respondents to answer. The researchers will be present during the time of interview so that

they could easily address any concerns of the respondents.

4. Tabulation of the collected data will be done, followed by data analysis and

interpretation.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were used for the analysis of data gathered by the

researchers. The Percentage, the Weighted Mean and T-test will used to interpret the data:

1. Percentage

This will be used to evaluate the participant’s frequency counts and percentage range of

specific related variables.

F
Formula: %= ×100
N

% is the percentage
41

F is the Frequency

N is the total number of respondents

100 a constant value

2. Average

This will obtained by adding the observed values and dividing by the number of observed

values.

Formula:

3. Standard deviation

This will indicate the variation among the observed values and their dispersion from the

mean.

Formula:

n = no of data point

= the mean of i

i= each of the values of the data

4. Chi – square

This will be used to test whether there is significant relationship between the perceptions by

the respondents and their profile, namely, age, marital status, religious affiliation, and
42

economic status, chi-square tests used. Chi square is a statistical test commonly used to

compare observed data with data we would expect to obtain according to a specific

hypothesis
