HB-1-71 HB-1-71 Page 1. INSTALLATION V-80@ HYDROMATIC BRAKE ‘The V-80 Hydromatice brake is manufactured in two versions, an earlier style termed end inlets and a later style termed side inlets. Both versions contain two_2 1/2" NPT inlets and are different in the location of the inlet connections. The end inlet version contains two 2 1/2" NPT inlets one on each end of the brake and each located 7 3/16" below the shaft centerline. Due to the limited space between the brake front cap and chain case, the inlets were made available on the side of the brake. The side inlet version contains two 2 1/2" NPT inlets located on either the left or right side of the brake and spaced 30 degrees from the brake vertical centerline, ‘The end inlet version uses 631193-B/631194-B Caps that require 631208-AL/631208-AR pocket sections. The side inlet version uses 631853-A/631854-A Caps that require 631855-AL 631855-AR pocket sections. The parts of the two versions are not interchangeable. All V-80 assemblies contain two 2" NPT outlets in the top of the brake, however only one of either 2" connection is required for the outlet or return line. All V-80 assemblies contain two drain plugs, in the bottom of the brake, and should inlet connections or outlet connections. In order to drain the oulet cavity of the brake, only one pipe plug need be removed. The following is a listing of brake assemblies with END INLETS. If the V-80 brake assembly number is not listed the assembly is a side inlet assembly listed in Repair & Maintenance Catalog HB-2-78. \V-80 END INLET BRAKE ASSEMBLIES 631538-x 0631741-X 0631545-x D631798-X 631546-x 631808-X 631555-x 0631810-X 631560-x 0631816-X 631562-x 632002-x 631575-X D632017-X 631582-x 632284-X 631599-x D632947-X 1631637-X 1B 1c 1D LF 16 1H HB-1-71 Page 2. REPAIR and MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS V-80@ BRAKE END INLETS GENERAL SECTION 1. When a Hydromatic Brake is taken out of service for any period of time, a surplus quantity of No, 2 waterproof grease should be pumped into all of the grease fittings to assure that all water in the seals and bearings will be purged from those areas. It is advisable to fill the brake with lubricating oll if itis to be taken out of service for a prolonged period, to prevent the formation of rust and scale within the brake. Numbers given in these instructions are item numbers and correspond to the ‘tem part numbers used on the attached parts list and assembly drawings. ‘The instructions are applicable to a number of similar V-80 Hydromatic Brake assemblies, all of which are typified by the drawing of Assembly D631545-X and D631637-X. In ordering parts, the brake assembly number and serial number, which are stamped on the name plate (34) of the Hydromatic Brake, is required to assure correct part replacement. NOTE: A- The difference between the typical assembly D631545-X & D631637-X and other similar assemblies are in shaft extensions and direction of rotation "TO BRAKE" from the extended shaft side. Most assemblies have the shaft extension on one side only (like the typical assemblies) although the diameter of the shaft extension and it's length may vary. A few assemblies have the shaft extended on both sides. Disassembly should proceed only to the point permitting replacement of damaged or worn parts for any repair job. All disassembly and assembly procedures should be undertaken with the Hydromatic Brake Shaft in a vertical position, As disassembly proceeds, the variousparts removed should be thoroughly cleaned, wrapped and stored. ‘All "O" rings and gaskets removed during disassembly must be replaced with new ‘ones. A minor cut or nick on an "0" ring, and prolonged compression of the "O" ring, will provide unsatisfactory service and can produce a failure. It is very important that extreme care be exercised in the reassembly of parts containing "O" rings as components. Lubricate all "0" rings and lip seal with light oil or grease to facilitate the reassembly process. 2A 28 2D 2E HB-1-71 Page 3 DISASSEMBLY SECTION 2, FOR REPLACEMENT OF BEARINGS AND/OR SEALS Itis advisable to replace the seals on both sides of the brake and not to replace the seals on one side only. Normally, if one side is defective only a short period of time will elapse before the other side may become defective. By replacing seals in both sides of the brake at the same time, considerable disassembly and assembly time may be saved in the future, In the replacement of the bearings or seals, the shaft extension side of the brake may be disassembled first or may be disassembled last since the brake Is Identical in construction on both sides. The following disassembly instructions assume that the seals or bearings on the shaft extension side will be replaced first and the opposite side replaced second. Place the brake shaft in a vertical position with the side opposite the shaft extension side on the bottom and the shaft extension side on the top, Note A - With brake assembly in this position, it should be resting steadily on sills, blocks, or horses capable of supporting weight of brake, so as to permit cover plate (16) to clear ‘supports, On the top side remove ten cap screws (22) & (23), or (23) & (40) securing the cover cover plate (16) or (39) and bearing adapter (14) to the cap (9). Remove cover plate (16) or (39). If the brake contains sleeve (43), apply heat to sleeve (43), and remove from shaft (1). Since the bearing inner race is a press fit on the shaft (1), it will be removed by utilizing the four tapped holes provided in the bearing adapter (14), by installing four 5/8-11 by 4 1/2" long all thread bolts and using as jack screws to remove the bearing (24), bearing adapter (14), and oil seals (18) & (19) as one piece. As shown in Figure U631568. Also remove protector ring (21). CAUTION: If the brake has been in service for a considerable period of time, the the jack screws will crack the bearing adapter (14) flange without pulling the bearing (14) from the shaft (1). Apply heat to the bearing (14) inner race, while pulling with the jack screws, until the bearing (14) moves on the shaft (1). Since the bearing (24) outer race is a slip fit with the bearing adapter (14), remove by hand. If seals (18) & (19) need to be replaced, press from bore of bearing adapter (14). Seal sleeve (5) need not be removed unless nicks, scratches, or sharp wear grooves are found in the sleeve surface. 2F 2-6 2-H 21 HB-1-71 Page 4. If seal sleeve (5) is to be removed from shaft (1), do not attempt to rotate sleeve (5) on shaft (1) since cap screw (6) is installed to prevent rotation of the sleeve during operation of the brake. The sleeve is a slip ft on the shaft and normally cam be removed by hand. However, if heat is required to break contact use with moderation so as not to melt "O" ring (4) that is used as a sealing element between sleeve (5) and shaft (1). If seal sleeve (5) has been removed, remove "0" ring (4) from shaft (1). Since cap screw (6) is stainless steel, it should not be removed unless the head has been damaged to the point where it will permit rotation of the sleeve. If cap screw (6) is determined to be defective remove from shaft (1). Procedures outlined in Paragraphs 2-A through 2-G will completely disassemble one side of the Hydromatic Brake for replacement of the seals and bearings for that side. ‘Turn the brake assembly over, with the opposite side pointing up, and disassemble the other side by repeating Instructions 2-A through 2-G. NOTE: A- If the Hydromatic Brake case is to be disassembled, for replacement of the pocket sections and rotor proceed to SECTION 4. If not, and only seals and bearings are to be replaced, proceed to SECTION 3. The required parts, to replace the bearings and seals, are available in Repair Kits for each brake assembly. The correct Repair Kit, for each assembly, is listed on each Parts List listed in the back of the manual. The individual parts supplied with the Repair Kit is listed on Page 37 of the manual. 3A 38 3D 3 3F 3G HB-1-71 Page 5. REASSEMBLY SECTION 3. REASSEMBLY FOR REPLACEMENT OF BEARINGS AND/OR SEALS With the shaft extension side of the Hydromatic Brake up or on top, reassembly of bearings and /or seals can begin. Before any reassembly procedures are begun, all parts to be used, either new or those removed in disassembly, should be thoroughly cleaned. All parts should be inspected and nicks and/or burrs filled smooth, CAUTION: When bearing adapters (14) are removed from caps (9) or (10) a sharp edge can result around the two angle holes in the bore of the ‘caps (9) or (10). Using ball type deburr tool or emery paper remove any sharp burrs around each angle hole. Failure to remove burrs will ‘cut “O" rings (17) when bearing adapter (14) is assembled into cap. If seal sleeve (5) has been removed, replace sleeve, making sure seal sleeve mates with shaft (1) shoulder. Replace protective ring (21). Permatex seal bores of bearing adapter (14) and press seals (18) & (19) into place in bearing adapter (14). Pay particular attention to the direction of the sealing lip, as shown on assembly drawing or drawing 31568. ; NOTE: A- Take every precatuion to avoid damaging or distorting the seal case in this procedure. Always use a flat steel plate to distribute pressure evenly. Make sure seals are seated against shoulder of bearing adapter. Install "O" rings (17) into grooves of bearing adapter. Wipe grease around lips of seals. Also fill space between seals (18) & (19) with calcium base grease. Apply calcium base grease to 0.D. of bearing adapter (14) in the area of the two 0" rings and install into bore of cap (9) or (10). Exercise care to avoid damaging the seals or "O" rings on installation into bore. Bolt bearing adapter (14) with six cap screws (23) making sure the four 5/8"-11 tapped holes are located equally about the vertical centerline as shown in U631570. Install bearing (24) preferably by expanding the bearing in 250 F oil bath or pressed on by the inner race only, otherwise there will be damage to the bearing. By either means seat inner race of bearing (24), against seal sleeve (5). Install seal (20) or (40) in cover plate (16) or (39). Secure cover plate (16) or (39) with two cap screws (22) or (40) without shim (15). Do not overtighten the cap screws. 3) 3K BL 3M 3N HB-L71 Page 6. Turn brake over so that the side opposite the shaft extension side is on top as shown in Figure U631583 and reassemble this side per Paragraphs 3-B through 3-H. NOTE: A - The seal sleeve (5), bearing adapter (14)/(39), oil seals (18) & (19),bearing (24), and "O" rings (17) & (4) were replaced in the previous side in order that the shaft (1) would remain in alignment with the brake casing when the brake is turned over. With the seals and sleeve installed, hoisting or turing the brake over, without the bearing (24) installed, will result in damage to the seals and sleeve. ‘The brake rotor (2) must be evenly spaced between the pocket section (8) & (7) for correct operation of the brake. NOTE: A- If neither of the bearings (24) have been replaced, the rotor will be evenly spaced between the pocket sections, provided the same thickness of shims (15), removed from each side, are replaced with new shims. With the brake in the same position as Paragraph 3+J, loosen the two cap screws (22) or (40) holding the cover plate (16) or (39) on the shaft extension side, or bottom side, until the rotor (2) face is resting on the pocket section (8) face, With the brake in the same position, measure clearance between rotor and pocket section faces (Point 1, Figure U631583), using feeler gauges. The clearance measured at Point 1 is the total brake clearance. Divide the total brake clearance measured by ‘two, since half of the total brake clearance is required on each side of the rotor (2) for the rotor (2) to be evenly spaced. EXAMPLE: Total Clearance (Point 1) = .250" .250"/2 = .125" Clearance each side of rotor = 125” Using a hydraulic jack or hoist, lift brake shaft (1) until rotor (2) face is mated with pocket section (7) face or clearance at Point 1 is zero. Install cover plate (16) and using feeler gauges measure the clearance or gap between the face of cover plate (16) and bearing adapter (14). From the measurement obtained at Point 1, Figure U631583, subtract the clearance for each side of rotor (2) previously determined. The resulting dimension is the thickness of shims (15) required between the cover plate (16) and bearing adapter (14) to evenly space the rotor (2). EXAMPLE: Clearance Point 2 = .150" Clearance each side rotor = .125" Shims Required = .150"-.125" = .025" Thickness of shims Install correct shims (15) between cover plate (16) and bearing adapter (14) and secure cover plate (16) with four cap screws (22). Turn brake over with the shaft extension side up, or on top. 3-Q BR 3S 37 HB-1-71 Page 7. On the shaft extension side, using feeler gauges measure the clearance between cover plate (16) or (39) and bearing adapter (14). The result is the amount of shims (15) required for no bearing (24) end play or zero bearing clearance. Remove cover plate (16) or (39), and add the correct amount of shims (15). Install cover plate (16) or (39) and secure with four cap screws (22) or (40). Note: If the brake contains cover plate (39), seals (45) next to the bearing (24) or with the seal lip facing in, must be installed prior to installing the cover plate. If the brake contains sleeve (43), heat the sleeve (43) and install on the shaft (1) Pushing the sleeve (43) through seals (45). If brake contains three seals (45), install the outer seal (45) into bore of cover plate (39) with seal lip facing out. Using feeler gauges, check the clearance on each side of the rotor (2) through the two 2" NPT holes in the bottom or top of the brake. NOTE: A - The clearance on each side of the rotor (2) should be equal within .010" and range from .120" to .136" for an unused brake. ‘The brake assembly should be filled with water and pressure tested at 50 PSI for brake assemblies with standard seals (80179-MC), or 100 PSI for brake assemblies with high pressure seals (80179-LZ), to check for leaks, prior to returning the brake to service. +A 48 4D +e 4F 46 4H 4H HB-1-71 Page 8. DISASSEMBLY ‘SECTION 4. DISASSEMBLY OF HYDROMATIC BRAKE CASE Procedures covered by this section must not be undertaken until both sides of the Hydromatic Brake have been disasembled as per Section 2. Place Hydromatic Brake on horses so as to have shaft in a vertical position and resting on cap (10). However, due to the brake being identical in construction, on both sides, it can be disassembled with either side facing down. Remove eighteen cap screws (25), nuts (27), and lockwashers (26), holding caps (9) and (10) together. Using two of the cap screws (25) as jack screws, insert them in the two tapped holes that is provided in the flange of cap (9) and separate caps (9) and (10). Insert two eye bolts, with 5/8"-11 thread in the two tapped holes and lift off cap (9) and turn cap (9) over. Pocket section (8) will be removed with cap (9). Remove twenty six, flat head socket cap screws (12) from 0.D. and I.D. of pocket section (8). Using 1/2"-13 tap clean out two tapped holes in flange of pocket section (8), and using two cap screws pull pocket section (8) from pilot in cap (3). Remove "O" ring (13) from groove in cap (9). Remove "O" ring (11) from groove in boss of cap (9)> Install eye bott with 5/8"-11 thread in tapped hole in end of shaft. Using hoist lift out shaft (1) and rotor (2) from remaining cap (10) and repeat Paragraph 4-D to complete disassembly of cap (10) and pocket section (7). The rotor (2) may be pressed from shaft (1) using a press of at least 75 tons capacity and the keys (3) removed. NOTE A - This operation should not be performed unless replacement of rotor (2) or shaft (1) are replaced. NOTE B - If the rotor (2) is t be removed from shaft (1), note should be made as to the direction of rotation "TO BRAKE". Viewing the shaft and rotor assembly from the extended shaft end, compare the SLOPE of the rotor vanes with the SLOPE of the pocket section vanes as shown on drawing U631262. Procedures covered in Section 2. and Section 4. will completely disassemble the Hydromatic Brake. 5A SC HB-I-71 Page 9. ‘SECTION 5. REASSEMBLY OF HYDROMATIC BRAKE CASE Before any reassembly procedures are begun, all parts to be used, either new or those removed is disassembly, should be thoroughly cleaned. All parts should be inspected and any nicks and/or burrs filed smooth. ‘Assuming the Hydromatic Brake case has been completely disassembled per Section 2. and Section 4., procedures in this section will reassemble it. All work outlined in this section must be completed before attempting to reassemble either side of the Hydromatic Brake as per Section 3. Keys (3) should be a slip fit in the rotor (2) keyways and a press fit in the shaft (1) keyways. File keys (3) for a slide fit in rotor (2) keyways, and drive keys (3) into shaft (1) keyways, making sure keys are seated solidly. Coat rotor (2) bore, shaft (1) diameter, and keys (3) with grease or anti-sieze compound. NOTE A - Check carefully to see that the slope of the rotor vanes are in proper direction. Itis possible to assemble rotor on shaft backwards. Remember that the Hydromatic Brake absorbs power in the direction of shaft rotation looking at the driving end (or shaft extension end) of the shaft. Refer to drawing U631262. NOTE B - Using hoist, start rotor (2) onto shaft (1) aligning rotor (2) keyways with shaft (1) keys (3). starting fit on the shaft (1) will allow the rotor (2) to be square with the shaft (1) before presssing the two parts together. NOTE C - In ll press operations the pressure must be applied to the end of the. SHAFT with the rotor (2) supported at the hub. The rotor (2) should not be supported on the vanes as damage to the vanes may result. Using a press of 50 ton capacity, press rotor (2) onto shaft (1) until rotor (2) hub is seated against shaft (1) shoulder. With cap (10) resting on horses, install "O" ring (11) into groove of cap (10). NOTE A - Some difficulty may be encountered in installing "O" ring in the groove. DO NOT attempt to lengthen "O" ring by stretching by hand, a rupture of the "O" ring may occur. Completely coat "O" ring with grease. With "O" ring groove facing up, start "O" ring in groove at one point. Using both index fingers, press down on "0" ring into groove while stretching "0" ring from starting point around to the opposite side. When opposite side is reached, with both fingers, relax finger pressure allowing "0" ring to contract into groove. SF 5G SH 5 5K HB-1-71 Page 10. Install pocket section (7) into cap (10) and secure with twenty cap screws (12). With vanes in pocket section (7) facing up, lower shaft (1) and rotor (2) into cap (10) with shaft extension pointing up. NOTE A - Compare slope of rotor (2) vanes with slope of pocket section (7) vanes as shown on drawing U631262 to avoid assembling brake backwards. Install "0" ring (11) into groove in cap (9) and assemble pocket section (8) into cap (9), and secure with twenty cap screws (12). Install "0 ring (13) in groove of cap (9). NOTE A - Some difficulty may be encountered in installing "O" ring in the groove. DO NOT attempt to lengthen "O" ring by stretching by hand, a rupture of the "O" ring may occur. Completely coat "O" ring with grease. With "O" ring groove facing up, start O" ring in groove at one point. Using both index fingers, press down on "0" ring into groove while stretching "O" ring from starting point around to the opposite side. When opposite side is reached, with both fingers, relax finger pressure allowing "O" ring to contract into groove, Lower cap (9) and pocket section (8) sub-assembly down over cap (10). Pilot on cap (10) fits into bore of cap (9). Make sure "0" ring (13) stays in groove of cap (9). Secure caps (9) and (10) with eighteen cap screws (25), lockwashers (26), and nuts (27). Procedures contained in Paragraphs 5-A to 5-] will completely reassemble the Hydromatic Brake Case. Procedures in Section 3. may now be undertaken to complete the Hydromatic Brake assembly. 6A 6-8 HB-1-71 Page 11. ‘LUBRICATION ‘SECTION 6. Lubrication instructions are included on the name plate of the Hydromatic Brake, but they will by repeated her for convenience, ‘When in use the seals (18) & (19), should be lubricated before and after each round trip with several strokes of the grease compressor through grease fittings (28). The bearings (24) should also be lubricated before and after each round trip, through grease fittings (28), with two to three strokes of the grease compressor, Use No. 2 water resistant calcium base rease for both seals (18) & (19) and bearings (24). Texaco Novatex No, 2 or equivalent, After repairs have been made to a Hydromatic Brake that entails the removal of the seals (18) & (19) and/or bearings (24), itis important that a sufficient quantity of grease be pumped into both bearings and seals to entirely fil all cavities around both the bearings and seals before brake is place in operation. Where such repairs are made in a field shop, both the shop personnel and drilling crew may sometimes depend on each other to do this, with the result that neither does it. When there is any question or doubt, lubricate it. The lack of lubrication will cause premature failure of seals and bearings. -NOTE- VANES OF ROTOR AND ADJACENT POCKET SECTIONS MUST CHECK AS SHOWN a1 280 DIRECTION OF ROTOR ROTATION “ TO BRAKE” CHECKING SLOPE OF ROTOR AND POCKET SECTION VANES.
