CHENGR 101A - Problem Set 2

Problem 1
The wind blows in through a garage door opening (10 ft long x 7 ft high) garage door with a speed of 5
ft/s, as shown by the figure. Determine the average speed, V, of air through the two window openings.
The size of each window is 3 ft wide x 4 ft high.

Problem 2
A hydraulic dredge is a device used to dredge sand from a river bottom. A mixture of sand and water is
expelled from the boat at 30 ft/s from a 2-ft diameter cannon at a 30° angle (see figure below). The sand
and water mixture has a specific gravity (ρ/ρH2O) of 1.2. Estimate the force needed to hold the boat
stationary.

Problem 3
A steady, inviscid and incompressible stream (d = 0.01 m) of refreshing beverage flows steadily from a
cooler (cooler diameter = 0.20 m). Determine the flow rate (Q) from the bottle pouring into the cooler.
Assume the depth of the cooler remains constant at h = 0.20 m.

Problem 4
Four structures shown below in (a), (b), (c), and (d) are on frictionless wheels and are initially held in
place. The contents of each structure are not known. When released, which devices will move to the right
and which to the left? Justify your answer.

Assume (1) the structures are restricted to only move in the x-direction, (2) the flow is incompressible,
and (3) that the pressure at both the inlets and outlets of all structures is atmospheric.

Problem 5
A 3-ft-wide channel is shown below. At one point, the velocity distribution is uniform with a velocity V,
and further down the stream, the velocity profile is u = 4y – 2y2 (u [=] ft/s and y [=] ft). What is the value
of V?
