Dear sister:

I am immensely happy to be able to write to tell you that we have already

arrived in California and we are all doing well in this new life. We arrived
about 5 days ago and we have already rented a very cozy little house in
which we are currently living. Life here, in the west, is totally different, ranging
from customs to gastronomic tastes to the ideology of the villagers. At first I
was surprised by the gratitude with which the miners received us on our
arrival. Most of them are very hard-working and willing to help in whatever is
necessary so we are happy with our situation.

To get to California, we took an express from New York 3 weeks ago that took
about 10 days to get to California. The train was completely full of people like
us looking for a better life in the west. We were told that the abundance of
resources in the West makes possible a great increase in jobs and more job
possibilities. I have also noticed that most of the western lands are full of train
tracks through which we saw an infinite number of trains carrying carbon
metal and other resources to the east. That's why I'm considering working as
a miner because we came to California in order to have a better life to be
happier and here the miners are paid considerably well considering that I
have worked all my life in New York collecting garbage and living in
subhuman conditions. That's why I think it was mainly a good idea to move
here.

As for Sarah, my wife, she has found work in an intensive cattle breeding
company where they care for and fatten the animals to later export them to
the east and make a profit. She tells me she's happy so I'm really glad about
that, too. In short, there are many differences with our previous life in which
we worked from sun to sun for a few miserable dollars and were surrounded
by a society full of criminals and corrupt people. Here in contrast, although
the work is hard, we are treated as people and there is an atmosphere of
brotherhood between all of us although sometimes there are some conflicts
with some Plain Indians. Therefore, know that we are doing well and I hope
you are also doing very well in NY dear sister.

Big hug,
Pedro.
