Metallic bonding

 The bonding in metals give metals their special properties

 Within a solid metal are held together by strong metallic bond

 There is fixed lattice structure of positive ions

 The outer shell of electrons are delocalized

 They are not restricted to one atom
 Rather shared between all atoms in the structure

Definition
A Metallic bond is a strong electrostatic attraction between the positive ions and the
negatively charged delocalized ions
 Fixed lattice of positive ions
 Surrounded by sea of delocalized electrons
 These electrons can move

Physical properties
 Strength of metals

Charge Delocalized electrons electrostatic attraction (stronger bond)

Size closer electrons stronger bond

 Electrical and thermal conductivity

The mobile electrons can act as charge carriers in the conduction of electricity and as energy
carriers in the conduction of heat.

 Malleability (you can shape it) and Ductility (draw into wire)

You can hammer a metal into a sheet or draw it into a wire, because the atoms aren’t directly
bonded to each other. The atoms just share electrons, so they can slide past each other.

 High melting and boiling points

Metals tend to have have high melting and boiling points. There are strong electrostatic
attractions between the giant lattice of cations and the sea of delocalized electrons.

 Good electrical conductors and heat conductors.
