Procedure

The group first borrowed the needed materials for the experiment. The group set up the materials after
borrowing and started to prepare the water bath. A 250 ml beaker was placed on top of the hot plate
for the water bath. For the first trial, the group set the temperature of the water up to 50˚C. Then after
that, a thermometer was clamped on top of the beaker to check the temperature of the water. It served
as the indicator if we would unplug it. Then the capillary tubes were each filled with the 3 volatile
organic liquids. The group measured and recorded the initial height of the liquids after using a digital
Vernier caliper. After the 50˚C was reached, the group unplugged the equipment and started to hold the
entire capillary tubes vertically inside the beaker and let it diffuse as hot water vapors evaporate from
the beaker. While holding the capillary tubes vertically and suspended on top, a fan was turned on and
placed it on top of the beaker and let gentle stream of air pass through inside. Then, after the 10
minutes set timer, the group measured and recorded the final height of the liquids after diffusion. Lastly,
the group repeated the trials but this time, a temperature of 65 ˚C and 80 ˚C was used.
