Shortlisting
Students are often naïve about the reality of the shortlisting process. People quote
horror statistics about how briskly an application might get read – five seconds,
ten, thirty – but quoting those numbers isn’t the same as properly imagining how it
feels to work through a whole stack of applications under pressure. Crucially, many
candidates tend to assume that all of their application will be read carefully. It won’t.

Virtually all jobs will require you to write a brief piece of text, in full sentences,
