I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Paramjiit Kaur Sardara Singh for the
guidance throughout this research as well as to my beloved lecturer, Madam Ros
Amisha. Special thanks also dedicated to the headmistress of the school where this
research is done as well as to my cooperating teacher during the second phase of
practicum, for giving the time for me to conduct this research. Lastly, lots of thanks
dedicated to all whom involved directly and indirectly in making this research
success especially to all my course-mate and English Department lecturers.

ABSTRACT
This action research aims to improve Year 5 pupils’ vocabulary for paragraph writing.
A preliminary investigation was carried out and it proved pupils’ vocabulary are
limited which cause them to have difficulties in writing paragraphs. Thus, a tool was
needed to help these pupils. Cinquain poem structure with pictures was then created
as an intervention. This research focused on identifying whether Cinquain poem
structure with pictures helps in improving pupils’ vocabulary for paragraph writing
and how it helps to improve pupils’ vocabulary for paragraph writing. Five
participants were identified from Year 5 based on the preliminary investigation. A
total of 3 sessions over 1 cycle were conducted using the intervention. Data in the
form of pre and post tests, pupils’ work and semi-structure interview were collected,
analysed and triangulated to validate the research findings. The findings reveal that
Cinquain poem structure with pictures improve pupils’ vocabulary for paragraph
writing because the comparison of pre and post tests showed improvements in terms
of number of words. Same goes to pupils’ work from session 1 until session 3.
Significant increase of number of words can be seen. The Cinquain poem structure
with pictures helps to improve pupils’ vocabulary by activating previous knowledge,
encourage creativity and it acts like a pre-writing process. Suggestions for the
second cycle is to change the structure of the Cinquain poem such as increasing the
number of words into the current structure or instead of words, change it into types of
sentences.
ABSTRAK

Kajian tindakan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan perbendaharaan kata murid tahun
5 untuk penulisan perenggan. Siasatan awal dijalankan dan ia membuktikan
perbendaharaan kata murid adalah terhad yang menyebabkan mereka mengalami
kesulitan dalam menulis perenggan. Oleh itu, satu alat diperlukan untuk membantu
murid-murid ini. Struktur puisi Cinquain dengan gambar kemudian diciptakan
sebagai alat tersebut. Kajian ini menumpukan kepada mengenalpasti sama ada
struktur puisi Cinquain dengan gambar membantu dalam meningkatkan
perbendaharaan kata murid untuk penulisan perenggan dan bagaimana ia
membantu meningkatkan perbendaharaan kata murid untuk penulisan perenggan.
Lima peserta telah dikenal pasti dari Tahun 5 berdasarkan penyiasatan awal.
Sebanyak 3 sesi daripada 1 kitaran dijalankan menggunakan struktur puisi Cinquain
dengan gambar. Data dalam bentuk ujian pra dan pasca, hasil kerja murid dan
temubual semi-struktur bersama murid dikumpulkan dan dianalisis untuk
mengesahkan penemuan penyelidikan. Penemuan menunjukkan bahawa struktur
puisi Cinquain dengan gambar meningkatkan perbendaharaan kata murid untuk
penulisan perenggan kerana perbandingan ujian pra dan pos menunjukkan
peningkatan dari segi bilangan perkataan. Begitu juga dengan hasil kerja murid dari
sesi 1 hingga sesi 3. Peningkatan yang ketara dalam aspek bilangan perkataan
boleh dilihat. Struktur puisi Cinquain dengan gambar membantu meningkatkan
perbendaharaan kata murid dengan mengaktifkan pengetahuan sebelumnya,
menggalakkan kreativiti dan bertindak seperti proses pra-penulisan. Cadangan untuk
kitaran kedua adalah mengubah struktur puisi Cinquain seperti menambah bilangan
perkataan ke dalam struktur semasa atau mengubahnya daripada perkataan kepada
ayat yang pelbagai.
