The Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM) takes fundamental research from a broad range of
disciplines and applies them to manufacturing challenges. MCAM forms an integral component of the Clayton
Precinct’s advanced manufacturing capabilities providing world-class infrastructure, expertise and collaborative
opportunities. With a state-of-the-art facility consisting of the latest technology for manufacturing specialised
and complex components from a wide range of metal powders (Ti, Ni, Al alloys and steel), MCAM draws on a
number of different cutting edge capabilities and expertise and apply them in novel and innovative ways to

POSITION PURPOSE
The MCAM Operations Manager supports the MCAM Co-Directors in the delivery of the centre’s strategy and
will manage the operational matters of the platform. This includes managing a range of strategic and operational
activities planning, functional service delivery, projects, reporting, business development, relationship
management and financial management. The position provides leadership to MCAM researchers in the delivery
of high-level, professional services and effective achievement of the center’s priorities and provides expert
advice at both strategic and operational levels.
This position will also play a key role in developing relationships with international stakeholders and clients to
grow MCAM’s international presence, in particular with leading researchers and manufactures in China. The

ability to communicate in Mandarin with these key stakeholders will help facilitate the development of these
relationships.
As a leader within MCAM, the MCAM Operations Manager will support the coordination of PhD students and
visitors.
Reporting Line: The position reports to the MCAM Co-Directors
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position provides direct supervision to approximately 3-4 staff and oversees a
team of approximately 10 staff
Financial Delegation: Not applicable
Budgetary Responsibilities: The position is responsible for managing a budget of $3-4 million and has an
authorised financial delegation of $100,000.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. As member of the management team, undertake strategic planning and business development activities to
build the sustainability of the centre, develop new services and expand services to a broader user base,
ensuring alignment with the University’s aspirations, as well as close alignment with broader research
initiatives
2. Lead, manage and be accountable for the delivery of all operational objectives in accordance with the
Institute’s strategic plan, including, but not limited to, program development, finance, staff management
and development, and broader outreach.
3. Manage and lead a team of staff members, including planning and allocating staff resources, developing,
coaching and mentoring employees and managing performance to deliver consistent service outcomes and
continuous improvements to key stakeholders
4. Build and sustain high-level relationships with an extensive network of colleagues, clients and stakeholders,
both local and international, and utilise these to grow MCAM’s footprint and deliver objectives as per the
centre’s strategic plan
5. Utilise extensive consulting and relationship management skills to engage, influence and negotiate at a
senior level with industry, government and academic stakeholders
6. Exercise strong financial management and be accountable for the delivery of all strategic and operational
objectives within the centre’s annual budget targets
7. Oversee and manage the preparation of business cases, position papers, briefings and reports for senior
management and project stakeholders, including presentation of information where required
8. Lead and manage a work environment of continuous review and improvement of business practices,
operational processes and service provision
9. Manage and oversee risk, compliance and quality assurance processes for the functions managed, including
regular monitoring and reporting in accordance with University and legislative requirements

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA


Education/Qualifications
1. The appointee will have:
 postgraduate qualifications and extensive, relevant experience; or
 extensive management experience and proven management expertise; or an equivalent combination of
relevant experience and/or education/training

2. Excellent management skills with proven ability to strategically manage and provide authoritative technical
and policy advice at a high level
3. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise with and influence senior
management, develop professional and effective communications for a range of audiences and deliver
engaging presentations
4. Extensive experience in leading, motivating and developing a team of academic and professional staff to
achieve strategic objectives
5. Outstanding planning and organisational skills, with experience establishing priorities, allocating resources
and meeting deadlines in a large, complex organisation
6. Demonstrated management experience in a matrix, or large and complex management structure
7. Significant staff management experience with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performance team
committed to excellent customer service
8. Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills including demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate new
concepts and information and deliver positive, innovative solutions
9. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to prepare and deliver reports
and advocate at all levels on complex issues
