Mining have mostly negative impact in environment but if we stop
the mining industry, it will also have negative impact in
Philippines. Our country is one of the biggest exporters of gold, nickel, copper and chromite, mining industry provides 236,000 jobs for the Filipino workers, communities also benefit from mining activities and everyone of us rely on what mining gives through we may not realize it. The result of the removing the mining will have huge impact: 5 years to recover to tax shortfall on local and people’s livelihood based on the statement of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III. We are exporters of minerals but if we implement total mining ban, instead of using our own minerals we will importing minerals from other countries. The 236,000 Filipinos will loose their jobs, how can the government provide jobs for those people and how can they assure the people that the salary they will get can cover their expenses. We could protect our environment even mining still exist, total ban is one of the solutions we have but if we look for other solutions there’s a lot possible. What if the DENR and local government units increase security so that no illegal activities can infiltrate, what if we limit the mining companies so that it can decrease envinronmental degradation, what if we raise the taxes of the mining companies so that it will decrease mining companies and the taxes we will get may allocate to the funds of environmental organizations and what if we improve our enforcements and implementations of laws, for example if the company had accident that cause of loss of lives and severly affected the ecosystems around the mining it will result to the shutdown of the company. Therefore, I’m in favor of mining here in our country. References: The good side of the mining industry by: Neal H.
