Student on the Street Assignment

Dr. Ahearn, CA 370

Due: by 5 p.m. today

Description: exercise in randomized interviewing, capturing comments, formatting and photo

IDs

Goal: to practice the above skills, as well as formulating questions designed to elicit usable
answers

How to do this assignment:

1. Charge your phone and bring a notebook that is easy to handle

2. Choose a partner
3. Decide on a question which South students can answer (can concern campus, nation, world)
Discuss your strategy for capturing 8 short bios/interviews/mugshots (head and shoulders)/
phone numbers in order to have a means of double-checking IDs or quotes.
4. Practice the wording of your question on other teams in class, then decide on a high-traffic
location to land your interviews. Seek usable, quotable answers (i.e., don't use the occasional
"uh-i'm-not-super-aware-of-the-world-around-me.")
5. Name your Word file with your last name (e.g., Ahearn_On_the_Street.)
6. Write your question at the top of the document, then number and transcribe your 8 interviews
with matching mugs. Follow a consistent format on the IDs (e.g., “Robert Smith, sophomore,
Huntsville.”)
7. Each team member uploads a copy of the whole document to the assignment in Sakai.

How to get credit for completing this assignment (most students should score 100 percent):

25 points each:

1. all names spelled correctly (I check these)

2. filed on time according to the instructions (file labeling, etc.)
3. consistent format for identifying speakers/mugs
4. usable, quotable answers to your question
