Primary activities - a type of industry that involves extracting or refining natural resources (mining,
forestry, fishing…)
Secondary activities - a separate activity that produces products eventually for third parties (house
construction, steelmaking…)
Tertiary activities - sector of the economy that provides goods and services to consumers using
goods produced by the other sectors (education, health, transport…)
Employment structures - proportion of people working in each sector, they change over a period of
time and vary from one place to another

ASSESS AND EXPLAIN THE LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE UK IN 1805 - 2005

In 1805 majority of people were farmers. Most people were on low wages and worked in the
primary sector. As a result of the industrial revolution, the main jobs changed dramatically. Fewer
people worked on the land and now majority of people worked in the secondary sector - most
mined coal or worked in heavy industries. During 20th century further changes occurred. Tertiary
sector became most prominent - there are many more hospitals, schools…
